William Haskett died at his home in Concordia last Sunday morning after a four weeks illness, of fever. Wm. Haskett was the son of Anthony and Mary Ann Haskett and was born in Perquimans county, North Carolina, March 3, 1819. At the age of 17 he moved with is widowed mother to Henry Co., Indiana. He was married June 22, 1842 to Sarah Haskett. From this union there were eight children, of whom Mrs. Caroline Hall, Eli Haskett, and Mrs. Sarah E. Osburn are still living. In 1856 he moved to Iowa where his wife died March 22nd, 1857. He was married a second time April 15, 1858, to Mrs. Elizabeth A. Johnson who still survives him. There were three children by this marriage, Emery C., Anna H., now Mrs. E.E. Chapman, and Ulysses G., deceased. All the surviving children of both unions were at his beside during his illness except Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Osburn. In his boyhood Mr. Haskett served an apprenticeship as a hatter, and in his riper years he followed the avocations of farmer, carpenter, hotel keeper and merchant. He was a member of the Blue Lodge Chapter Commandery of A.F. & A.M. He was a staunch republican from the organization of the party and lost no opportunity to aid the black man in his search for freedom in ante bellum days. He voted for Harrison in 1840 and again in 1888. He came to Concordia Feb. 15, 1882, and by his social, obliging manner soon gained the good will, confidence and respect of every one. The closing of all business places in the city and the very large attendance of our citizens at his funeral showed the high esteem in which he was held by all. He was buried in the honors of Masonry, Tuesday, at 2 p.m., there being nearly a hundred of that order in line. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield
