H. VAN SLYKE OCCURRED HERE SATURDAY Has Been a Resident of Dunlap Since 1872—Well Known and Respected by All. William H. Van Slyke was the son of Henry and Sally Van Slyke, and was born in Erie county, New York, on June 30, 1841, and died at his home in Dunlap February 3, 1923. His early life was spent on a farm and when the civil war clouds arose he enlisted on August 12 , 1862 and was in Company F., 116th regiment, New York volunteers, and was discharged in Washington D. C., on June 26, 1865. He was married August 1, 1866 to Ermine E. R. Colwell in Erie County, New York by the Rev. Ira Simpson, and to this union was born six children, Burt, Carl, Adah, Frank, Lewis, and Kate, and of this family only survive, Carl H. of Dunlap and Frank L. of Manilla; Mrs. Ermina Van Slyke having departed this life on December 23, 1920, and there are four grandchildren surviving and one sister, Amelia, two brothers, Horace and Eugene of Erie County, New York. After his marriage he operated a cheese factory in Ahrford, New York, and from this place he moved to Jamestown, New York, where he was engaged in the furniture business. In the summer, of 1872 he went to Minnesota, and from which place he came to Dunlap, Iowa, having made the trip overland, accompanied by his brother-in-law, James H. Colwell, and has lived in Dunlap since. He was a peace officer for years, doing his duty unflinchingly and retaining the respect of those with whom he came in contact. Mr. Van Slyke belonged to the Congregational church, the G. A.R., Hospital lodge, No.244, A. F. and A. M., Art Chapter No. 89, Royal Arch Mason and-the M. W. A., all of this, place; he was also an honorary member of the Relief Corps. He was Quartermaster of the G.A.R. for over _ years and was very much attached to this organization, and loved his comrades and his country. He was an enthusiastic member of the Masonic Order and held many positions of trust therein. In November 1921 he went to Texas, to spend the winter, and on November 26th, 1921 he was married to Mrs. Effie Schlensig at Edinburg, Texas, the Rev. Mamnee officiating. They returned to Dunlap in the spring of 1922. Early this year they united with the Congregational church of this city, and during his sickness he was very much in prayer and said on one occasion that we must banish all unkind offer thoughts from our hearts. He was a man of intense feeling, and when his thoughts were directed to higher things he thought much on this wise. His wife has been a loving and devoted help mate and has made life a real pleasure for him during their short married life.
