His father must have died when William was young, as William (age 12) was listed on the 1885 census for Madison Township, Fremont County, Iowa, living with John N. Black (age 59) and his wife Rachel A. Black (age 29). William married Agnes Alix on February 13, 1902 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Plattsmouth Journal, April 27, 1911, Page 7: DEATH OF WILLIAM JAY HERRING THIS MORNING He Passes Away at His Home in This City After Lingering Illness William Jay Herring, whose illness has been chronicled in the columns of the Journal, breathed his last at his residence on South Third this morning. The deceased was born in Fremont county, Iowa, September 18, 1873, and resided in that state until about sixteen years ago, when he removed to Plattsmouth. About nine years ago he was married to Miss Agnes Alex, an adopted daughter of A. J. McKinney and wife. From this union three children were born, who with the widow, survive the deceased. The children are: William Ray, 8 years old; Beatrice, 5 years of age, and Bernice, 3. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. A. J. McKinney. The deceased was a member of the Christian church, having joined the church when he was 15 years of age, and was a consistent member of that organization up to the time of his death. Mr. Herring had been in bad health for some years, but his last sickness dates from last October, when he came home from his work very ill, suffering from complications of lung and stomach trouble until death came to his relief. Some weeks ago his wife took him to a hospital at Omaha but physicians could do nothing to relieve him and he returned to Plattsmouth to die. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon. N. B. - Since the above was placed in type the Journal is informed that the funeral will occur tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Christian church and will be conducted by Rev. Austin. The Plattsmouth Journal, May 1, 1911, Page 8: FUNERAL THIS AFTERNOON From Friday's Daily - The funeral service over the remains of the late William Jay Herring took place this afternoon at the Christian church, of which the deceased was a member for more than half his life... ... Many out-of-town relatives and friends were present at the funeral. Rev. Austin spoke encouragingly to the bereaved wife and children. The church was filled with sorrowing relatives, friends and neighbors. The pallbearers were: Philip Rhin, Robert Newell, Henry Perry, Frank Cook, Thomas Stokes and Ratio Taylor. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery.
