Description	:	William Orner Bardsley, son of John and Anna L. Bardsley, was born August 25, 1896 near Wauneta, Nebraska, and passed away March 1, 1950 at his home south of Wauneta at the age of 53 years, 6 months and 6 days following a severe heart attack. Bardsley, was born August 25, 1896 near Wauneta, Nebraska, and passed away March 1, 1950 at his home south of Wauneta at the age of 53 years, 6 months and 6 days following a severe heart attack. His early childhood until he was 7 years of age was spent on the Bardsley farm, now known as the Rueter place, 5 miles south of town. He attended two years of rural school near his home, then moved with his mother to Nelson, Nebraska, where he grew to manhood, receiving his education there. He was a veteran of World War I, having enlisted at an early age, serving 3 1/2 years with the 5th Cavalry regiment under Ge. John J. Pershing, spending most of that time in active duty on the Mexican border. On August 3, 1923 he was united in marriage to Mary Petty of Nelson. The young couple made their home there for 5 years, when they moved to Wauneta and located on the farm of the late Osa Orner, an uncle. Later the family moved to Wauneta where he was employed by the C.E. Johnston Hardware and Furniture Co. The death of Mr. Orner caused the Bardsleys to return to the south divide where he has since managed and controlled the extensive land holdings of the Orner estate. Mr. Bardsley was a charter member of the American Legion at Nelson, later transferring his membership to Willard Hansen Post, Wauneta, where he proved to be an active and interested member. He was a member of the Wauneta Methodist church (sic). Recent months found him a regular attendant of the Mt. Zion Methodist church (sic). His hobbies were hunting and fishing with a keen interest in the conservation of wild life. He loved nature and the great outdoors. Bill's friends were legion, his kindness to others far reaching. A heart ailment over a period of 5 years slowed down his otherwise active duty on the farm and in his community. During this period he had been a patient in the Veterans hospital in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Lincoln, Nebraska. His final illness was of two weeks duration. Death came from a severe heart attack as he started for Lincoln to enter the hospital. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Richard; his aged mother, Anna L. Francis of Nelson; one brother, Wayne, of Tulsa, Okla. His father preceded him in death in 1900 and a sister Gladys in 1918. Last rites for Mr. Bardsley were held Saturday afternoon, March 4, at the Mt. Zion Methodist church (sic), with the Rev. Holmes pastor in charge. The casket bearers were James F. Murphy, Paul Littrell and A.G. Klawitter of Nelson, E.R. Voorhees, A.R. d'Allemond and C. Verne Fisher of Wauneta. The three men from Nelson were World War I buddies of the deceased and Mr. Klawitter served the entire time with him on the Mexican border. Music was furnished by the male quartette, composed of Neil and Paul Kitt, Emerson Schwenk and Byron Stock. Mrs. Emerson Schwenk accompanied at the organ as they sang "In The Garden" and "Saved By Grace." Neil Kitt sang "My Work Is Done." The entire chancel was banked with a profusion of flowers which spoke a silent tribute of the departed. The church and churchyard was filled with friends from far and near, as a final mark of respect. Veterans of both World War I and II attended the service in a body, and had charge of the burial at Riverside cemetery (sic). His buddies of World War I composed the firing squad. Interment was made in a plot chosen by himself, in the northwest corner of the cemetery overlooking the Frenchman river (sic). Relatives and friends from away who came for the funeral were: H.W. Bardsley and family of Tulsa, Okla., a brother; Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Petty, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith, David and Jack, Mr. and Mrs. John Petty and Willa Mae of Nelson; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Adams and Irene, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Crandell of Fairfield, Dale Smith of Ogallala; Mrs. Nellie B. Wright, Miss Lettie Orner of Nelson; Mrs. Ida Whiting, Wood River; Mrs. Mary Griffith, Hermosa Beach, Calif.. The four latter were aunts of the deceased. J.E. Portwood of Nelson, an uncle, Mr. and Mrs. H. Mc Adamson of Nelson; Lyle Whiting of Shelton and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kloeger of Cheyenne, Wyo. were cousins. Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Counce, Hayes Center; Leland Peterson and Mary Lou of Hastings; Mr. and Mrs. John Bealle and family of Henderson and Mrs. Alice Walker of Sharon Springs, Kansas.
