William Harmon was the only son, and the youngest of five children. He was born at Waverly, Iowa on May 6, 1864. His parents were the Honorable William P. Harmon, who located and named Waverly, and Alzina Esther Reeves Harmon, who were among the early settlers in the area, having moved here in 1853. The father made many plans for his son, but did not live to see them carried out, as he died in December of 1864, six months after the birth of his son. Will Harmon grew to manhood in Waverly. He received his education in the public schools, afterwards taking business courses at Cedar Rapids and Decorah, Iowa, where he received his diploma. He was married to Nora Rice of Waverly in 1887, and they immediately moved to Shelton, Nebraska where they made their home. In November of 1888 following childbirth, Nora died leaving him with a one week old son, Craig. At two years of age Craig was adopted by Rev & Hattie Chambers, and now lives in Sunnyvale, California, where he is a foreman in an iron factory. In 1890 Will returned to Waverly and made his home with his sister, Jennie Harmon Case. On January 1, 1900 he married Mrs. Esther Donlon. Five children were born to them, one dying at birth. Mr. Harmon followed the painter's trade until about three years ago (1915) when his health failed. He was an artist in his work, as many will testify. Everyone who knew Will Harmon liked him and liked his work. About four weeks ago he went to Waterloo to take treatments, thinking they would be beneficial, but the relief was only temporary. He was nearly blind and could see but short distances, only recognizing his family and friends by their voices. On Saturday, August 22, he was not feeling as well as usual and on Sunday took to his bed. He suffered a great deal and only regained consciousness for a few seconds at a time. On August 22, at 10 A.M. he went to sleep and at 4 P.M. the tired body was at rest. Without a struggle the end came. He was a member of the Knights of the Maccabees, being their Record Keeper. He was not a member of any church, but his sympathies reached out to all of them, and he was always ready to help in any way as far as he was able. He loved good literature and enjoyed reading to his children, especially their Sunday School papers. The last few months being unable to see it pleased him to have others read to him, and took great interest in matters pertaining to the war (World War 1). He wanted others to enjoy his papers with him. He often asked that the Bible be read to him, his favorite chapter being the Sixth Chapter of Matthew. He asked to be prayed for, and said he prayed all of the time. He knew he could not get well and often talked of it. He told others he was willing and ready to go, but would like to get better so he could work again.
