Description	:	The first church in Saint Joseph Parish was built before 1641 (just 14 years after the first settlers arrived in Barbados), but was damaged by hurricane in 1789. The structure was rebuilt, only to be completely destroyed by another hurricane in 1831 which flattened most of the trees and buildings on the Island. Read More	The first church in Saint Joseph Parish was built before 1641 (just 14 years after the first settlers arrived in Barbados), but was damaged by hurricane in 1789. The structure was rebuilt, only to be completely destroyed by another hurricane in 1831 which flattened most of the trees and buildings on the Island. At that time there was considerable dispute as to where the new church for the Parish should be located. Thus the present church was not built until 1839, at the village of Horse Hill, two miles uphill at the foot of Hackleton's Cliff. In recent years the entire plain of land on which St Joseph's Church stands has been slipping gradually away from the higher ground. As a consequence, major structural damage has occurred. Major weather events and a lack of funding for proper restoration, have also been contributing factors. In 2012 a decision was taken by the Anglican Diocese of Barbados to close down the Church for public use, and it is even possible the historic building itself may imminently be demolished. In the fall of 2012, the congregation moved its services to another chapel a few miles distant, and the doors were closed. The cemetery, for now, remains where it has always been for the past 200 and more years.
