Read More	Caleb was a namesake for his paternal uncle, who was a resident of the village of Salem, Ohio until 1810 when he returned to Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Historian and author Dale E. Shaffer wrote that in 1814 Caleb's father and uncle Stacy established the village's first manufacturing industry, a wool and cotton mill, that was called the Manufacturing Company of Salem. Furthermore, Shaffer's history implies that the village was Caleb's birthplace and hometown. In 1817, Caleb and his family were still residents of the village as evidenced by a change in their Monthly Meeting memberships from Salem to nearby Marlborough. In 1820, Caleb and his family removed to Brownsville as documented by their membership in nearby Providence Monthly Meeting. For the first time, the Hunt brothers (Elisha, Nathan, Caleb and Stacy) and their families were living in the same community. Consequently, members of the extended Hunt family heard the history of the steamboat Enterprise firsthand from the participants. And here is where Caleb and his namesake met for the first time. Prior to January 3, 1823, when Ann Warrington Hunt was born, Caleb and his family had returned to Salem as evidenced by the Providence Monthly Meeting Minutes for October 22, 1822. Her mother died on February 15, 1823, leaving Nathan with his seven children to raise. Coincidently, Rebecca Sharp was a local Quaker widow who had her seven children to raise. On April 28, 1824, Nathan and Rebecca were joined in marriage by Quaker ceremony in the Salem Meetinghouse. Caleb and Mary Ann Sharp were nine years old when they became part of a family made up of two parents and their 14 children. From November 24, 1830 to September 19, 1832, Salem Monthly Meeting minutes show that Caleb's father served as a clerk. From July 23, 1828 to May 22, 1833, Rebecca was recorded numerous times in the Salem Monthly Meeting minutes. On June 19, the recording stated: "Rebecca Hunt having removed it thought right to release her". Consequently, between May 22 and June 19, the Nathan and Rebecca Hunt family removed from Salem and settled in Cleveland their new hometown. On April 1, 1835, Caleb and Mary Ann were joined in marriage by Quaker ceremony in the Salem Meetinghouse. Their marriage certificate recorded that Caleb, Mary Ann, Nathan and Rebecca were residents of Cleveland. After the ceremony they all returned to their hometown. In 1836, Mary Ann gave birth to Elma and, in 1839, to Emmor Sharp. In 1840, Caleb and his father were each the head of their respective household in Cleveland as recorded in the U. S. Federal Census. On January 23, 1841, Stacy wrote that Nathan and Rebecca were spending the winter in Salem and might return to Cleveland in the spring. Daniel Howell Hise wrote: "Jul 4th [1850] Clear and pleasant. Attended the Meeting which was held in a grove. Attended by a vast concourse of people..." This was the setting for the historic picture that Caleb produced on that particular Independence Day in Salem. Mary Hussey Hunt wrote in her diary: [6th Mo] "2nd" [1851] "C Hunt came up [to Moorestown] this evening and we have talking about taking uncle [Elisha Hunt] likeness which is a very common affair, ..." On June 15, 1851, Stacy wrote to Elisha: "Caleb came home last 3rd day in good heart. William helpt him to funds to make his last trip. I am in hopes he will be able to do something now to save a little. I think he has had experience by this time that he will profit by." Joseph W. Thompson wrote: "[Machinist work] was done by brothers Nathan and Caleb Hunt,..." in Samuel C. Taylor's machine shop, Salem. Daniel Howell Hise wrote: "Oct 13 [1851] went to Caleb Hunts new engine it works well." From December 17, 1853 to January 19, 1856, an advertisement for "Hunt & Boone" that extolled their skill as daguerreotypists ran in the Anti-Slavery Bugle. During October of 1856, Mary Ann gave birth to Isabella. On June 22, 1857, Mary Ann died. On June 20, 1861, Stacy wrote to Elisha: "Charles Bassett told me a few days ago that Caleb Hunt had written to him that he would be going past Salem about this time with a company of volunteers and wanted to see his Children at the Station says he is Lieutenant, I did not understand where they were going to." "Lieut. Caleb Hunt died Dec. 1, 1862, at Milton Junction, the result of injuries received in an attempt to get on a railroad car while in motion," by historian Charles R. Tuttle. Daniel Howell Hise wrote: "Dec 14 [1862] Caleb Hunt a native of Salem was Buried he was killed on a Rail Road in Wisconsin. at the time of his Death he was 1st Lieutenant in 1st Wiss Battery and was on his way to take charge of a Camp of Instruction." Hunt, Caleb First listed as a daguerreian in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1853. There he was listed at 32 West Fourth Street, in partnership as Hunt and Weeks (W.H.). The gallery location was apparently the old location of Fontayne and Porter. Hunt was reported earlier as a daguerreian operator for Jeremiah Gurney in New York City, but the dates are unknown. In March, 1853, a newspaper advertisement proclaimed Hunt was exhibiting two daguerreotypes of Lola Montez, one of them 12x15 inches. It also noted he had a camera with a 6-1/2 inch lens, claimed to be the largest in the United States. In March, 1854, Humphrey's Daguerreian Journal noted that Hunt had new rooms on Superior Street, near Forest City House, in Cleveland, Ohio. He advertised his gallery was the largest in the whole country, that he had the largest quick-working camera in the entire country, and that he could take 100 persons on a single plate. Stacy Hunt wrote on January 23, 1841 from Salem to Elisha Hunt regarding their brother and his family: "Brother Nathan is now here." " ...him and Rebecca came expecting to spend the winter about here,..." "I dont know whether they will stay here or return to Cleaveland in the spring. I dont think Enoch or Caleb are engaged at any permanent business. Enoch works in a boat yard and gets $1.75 a day which I should call meager enough. Caleb is doing little jobs turning at which by less attention he can make good wages at many jobs. if their mother and father should settle at Salem I shall look for their return likewise as soon as they can leave there [?]." We regret to learn that a serious accident to Lieut. Caleb Hunt, of the first Wisconsin heavy artillery, which it is feared will result in his death. He was a passenger aboard the afternoon train from Madison to Milwaukee. When the train stopped at Milton Junction, he jumped off, and after the train started again, attempted to get on, but lost his balance and fell, his left arm striking the track immediately in front of one of the wheels. His arm was shockingly crushed to the elbow, his collar bone was thought to be broken, and he was otherwise badly bruised about the breast.
