Colonel Alexander Greenwood Gower, whose funeral took place in this city yesterday forenoon, was born in the city of Abbott, State of Maine, on the 31st of March, A. D. 1828. At an early period of his life his parents removed to the State of Ohio, and thence to Iowa, settling in the last named State thirty-four years ago. Colonel Alexander Greenwood Gower, whose funeral took place in this city yesterday forenoon, was born in the city of Abbott, State of Maine, on the 31st of March, A. D. 1828. At an early period of his life his parents removed to the State of Ohio, and thence to Iowa, settling in the last named State thirty-four years ago. At 18 years of age he entered the Freshman class in Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., where he remained two years. He graduated at the Kentucky Military Institute with fair honors at 22 years of age. He immediately entered into the profession of civil engineering, laying out and constructing the Louisville and Lexington Railroad, the Lexington and Danville Railroad, was Superintendent of the Kentucky River suspension bridge on the last named road, and was two years superintendent of the construction of the suspension bridge over the Ohio at Cincinnati. He spent two years on his farm near Monee, Ill., and then moved to Weston, Mo., where he was Chief Engineer in the construction of the Missouri Valley Railroad. He was Chief Engineer in the construction of the St. Louis and St. Joseph Railroad, and was Superintendent of the Western Division of the North Missouri Railroad. In the summer of 1872 he engaged in the enterprise in this city where death overtook him. Colonel Gower was a firm friend, a man of the strictest integrity, and of the Apostle Paul's description in business. He was an indulgent father, the life of the circle in which he moved, and a most devoted husband. He made no open profession of faith in Christianity, but was a firm believer in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, and in salvation by Him, and only by Him. He often expressed himself as not afraid of death, because of his certainty of safety in another.
