Read More	School report written by Julie Donnelson (me) dated Jan. 4, 1983. (interviewed Alice for the report) Alice Jensen's Childhood Alice was born March 2, 1902. She was born in a home west of Pisgah. She was just one of ten children in her family. Her home was a dugout built in the side of a hill. The house in which she lived was overly crowded. Alice recalled, "We always had to sleep three to a bed, and I was always the one stuck in the middle." They liked to squish her but she always got part of the blanket. She remembers all kinds of animals they found. She always kept her dolls in a closet. One day she went to get her dolls, and when she opened the door there was a mouse and big bullsnake. She yelled, "Snake, mouse, mouse, snake, help!" She never again kept her dolls in that closet. Her mom and dad had fleece under their bed and their cat had kittens right under the bed where it was soft. Alice remembers the kind of work she had to do. Since she lived on a farm she always got to carry water from a ditch to water the cows. She also picked berries and fruit. My grandmother considered her family average because she at least had food. Her family spent most of their money on food and clothes. They were never very fancy. They grew a lot of popcorn and every year they would take their popcorn to the store and trade it for shoes. Most of their food was grown and Alice's mother made all the clothes. Alice's mother was never into punishing but her father was. He was "in charge" of any punishment. Alice loved that because she was "daddy's favorite." Everything she did got blamed on her brother Bill. Religion was always important in the Johnson family. They started young with home classes. They included a lesson, songs, and a small offering. They had their own Sunday School, which was easy with ten children. Once a month the family traveled in a buggy to Pisgah for communion. They went to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They are not the Mormons. Alice became a member of the RLDS church at age 10. She was baptized in the Little Sioux River. Alice was always successful in school. She always had to walk two miles to school. For some unknown reason she liked lard sandwiches. She used to take them to school for lunch. None of the other kids ever wanted to steal her lunch. John & Alice Jensen John Jensen and Alice Johnson got married on Feb. 25, 1932 at the RLDS church in Mo. Valley. They never had any serious problems in their marriage and they just had their 50th anniversary last February. They first met at church. John asked Alice to a baseball game on a Sunday afternoon. Alice only went because she had nothing better to do. Alice succeeded in having John join the RLDS Church. He was ordained a teacher at age 40 and became an elder at age 46. He performed 241 funerals and over 150 weddings. Alice worked at the phone company as an operator while John worked for various people building houses. On May 3, 1936, John and Alice had a son and named him Duane. Duane has grown up to be a chronic ice cream eater just like his dad. Every night their wives get out a half gallon of ice cream and it disappears right before her eyes. On October 29, 1939, John and Alice had Marge. They immediately put Marge on piano lessons when she wanted them. Piano was a natural talent for my mom. John and Alice had two very special wedding anniversaries. My mother and father threw them a surprise anniversary party for their 25th anniversary. Boy were they surprised! They were shocked. They couldn't believe that it was kept a secret for months. Just about 8 months ago my family and Duane Jensen's family threw them a 50th anniversary party. It was not a surprise, but they appreciated it all the more. Grandma and Grandpa saw people they haven't seen for years. ________________ Notes from 90th Birthday Interview with John Jensen: John Jensen, born 10-13-1903 in Crescent, Iowa. Parents were Henry Christian Jensen and Ida May Smith. Ida's parents, John L. Smith and Nellie C. came into America from Prince Edward Island. Henry Christian Jensen's father was a sea captain and owned his ship. Henry quit school in the 6th grade, and was an elevator steward at Iseman's (later Beno's) when a young teen. The elevator was water powered. At age 16, Henry was a steward at the Grand Hotel in Council Bluffs. Henry painted the Broadway Methodist Church steeple. John Jensen attended #4 Hazel Dell School in his younger years. In 1917 his family moved to the farm 3-1/2 miles west of Loveland. John attended Riverview until through 9th grade, then quit school to work the farm. In 1920 he took a business course in bookkeeping/typewriting. In 1929, John went to Ames for 2 years, taking a farm short course. John met Alice at church, and Alice came to Missouri Valley to work as a telephone operator. John's first radio was a crystal set radio. He recalls seeing a 1917 propoganda movie called "Kaiser The Beast of Berlin" to promote Liberty bonds. His favorite theater was the Astro Theatre in Omaha. Pete and Jack were the names of his family's mules. Their first car was a 1913 Studebaker 7 passenger touring car with right hand drive. In 1916, John and Grace bought a Ford Model T and rebuilt it. After college, John lived with his folks and farmed. In 1932 he married Alice, and farmed his parents' farm. John had a 1928 Chevy truck that he took to Omaha a lot. He enjoyed doing custom machine work on the farm and bought the CC camp east of Mo. Valley in 1944, moving his machining/manufacturing business to Mo. Valley. [probably Camp D-4 (Company #778) est. 10/26/1935 1 mile east of Mo. Valley] John didn't like the retail side of the business and sold out to Clifford Streck of Omaha. Henry Christian Jensen lived until 59 years of age, and died in 1933 of ALS. He was named "Studebaker Chris".
