Description	:	Tykie Painter passes Alice M. "Tykie" Painter, 88, a lifetime resident of the Colville area, passed away on March 12 in Colville. "Tykie" Painter, 88, a lifetime resident of the Colville area, passed away on March 12 in Colville. She was born on July 16, 1913 in Arden, the daughter of Edward and Georgiann (Gardner) Huguenin. Mrs. Painter began her schooling in Arden and later attended school in Colville. She began working as a cook at the age of 10 for the local logging crews. Following her education, she married Clarence Cox in 1932. They resided in Colville, where she worked on the family ranch raising livestock, gardening, and caring for her family. She also worked as a cook for several local restaurants, including Newlands, King Coles, and Chub's Tavern. She and Clarence later divorced and in 1950 she opened the Burger Inn in Colville with Grover "Skinny" Chester Painter. They were married in the early 1960's and together opend the Park Rapids Lodge in 1968. Skinny passed away later that year and Tykie sold the lodge in 1969. She later worked for Harvey Hall and operated a lunch counter at the Arden Store. Mrs. Painter semi-retired and helped cook for her son's hay crews. She also cooked at the local fairs in the American Legion and VFW concession stands. She attended the Northeast Washington Fair for over 50 years. Tykie and Luckie Hansen opened "Luckie's" concession booth in 1980 and she later opened her own "Cook Shack" in 1985 and continued to cook at local fairs and auctions. She cooked her last hamburgers (six total) while residing at Pinewood Terrace Nursing Home in 2000. She explained that she wanted to cook in the "new Millennium" to complete 50 years of cooking hamburgers. Mrs. Painter was actively involved with the VFW, American Legion, Drum and Bugle Corps, White Lake Grange, and as a 4-H leader. She will be remembered for her dance band "Tykie's Gang," and the homemade food, including the countless hamburgers that were always made with a little piece of her heart, never forgetting to "salt those burgers." Tykie Painter is survived by one son, one sister, one brother, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral service was March 15 at the United Methodist Church in Colville. Graveside service followed at the Mountain View Park cemetery in Colville. Reverend Greg Knox officiated. Memorial contributions can be given to the Shriner's Hospital. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements. Statesman-Examiner - March 20, 2002 - page 6
