Description	:	Alvin Emery Dickinson, 91, of rural Hiawatha, died Sunday morning, February 26, 2012, at Maple Heights Nursing Home. Alvin was born May 31, 1920, a one-half mile west of Hiawatha, one of three children of Bryce Gordon and Mae Isabel Wright Dickinson. Alvin's father passed away when he was five years old. Read More	Alvin Emery Dickinson, 91, of rural Hiawatha, died Sunday morning, February 26, 2012, at Maple Heights Nursing Home. Alvin was born May 31, 1920, a one-half mile west of Hiawatha, one of three children of Bryce Gordon and Mae Isabel Wright Dickinson. Alvin's father passed away when he was five years old. He attended first grade at Central School, then made his home with grandparents John William and Martha Alice (McCall) Dickinson on their farm 2 miles west of Hiawatha. He attended seven years at Willow Grove Country School prior to graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1938. While growing up, he suffered an eye injury to his right eye, losing the vision in that eye. He worked on the farm and followed threshing crews. After graduation, he worked at the Sabetha Creamery and Hiawatha Dairy Products Co. before being inducted into the Army of the United States, September 10, 1942, at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He was assigned into active service with the 108th General Hospital in New Orleans, LA, with a unit totaling 733 people. This unit was sent to Northern France, 10 miles north of Paris – Beaujon Hospital. His main duty was ordering and receiving food for 5000 people. He delivered orders to General Eisenhower, who was Head Officer of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces at his Paris Office and his office at the hospital. Alvin received his honorable discharge January 15, 1946, as a Technician Fourth Grade, 108th General Hospital, Army of the United States. Upon returning home from the service, Alvin was employed at Ford Motor Co. in Hiawatha. He later farmed and raised livestock and was employed 24 years at the Brown County Co-op Assn. Mr. Dickinson was a longtime member of Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha where he was very active through the years. He served on the Church Board, was Church treasurer for 15 years, and had also served as the adult Sunday School Superintendent. Alvin was also a lifetime member of Wenger American Legion Post #373 of Powhattan, and the Maple Leaf Square Dance Club and enjoyed a number of years square dancing. When Alvin was younger, he was involved with 4-H. He was also a former member of BPOW #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge. Alvin enjoyed family vacation trips including visiting family at Okinawa, Japan. During retirement years, he enjoyed the tour trips which included visiting 49 states, Panama Canal, Mexico, and Canada. He enjoyed word search puzzles, watching geese at the City Lake, game shows on TV, reading and spending time working in the shop, and visiting with friends at the local coffee shop. He was married to Charlotte Ann Rieger at the Evangelical Reformed Church at Fairview on December 15, 1946. They made their home just south of Hiawatha on 73 Highway for many years. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters: Linda (Robert) Stephens of Topeka, Brenda (Michael) McNary of Meriden, a son Steven (Kelly) Dickinson of Cambridge, MN; a sister Myrtle Krebs of Nebraska City, NE; 6 grandchildren; a step-grandson; 7 great-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-grandchildren. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; step-father Clarence Moseman; a brother Warren Dickinson, sister-in-law Dorothy Dickinson; and brother-in-law Elmer Krebs. A celebration of Alvin's life is planned for 10:30 Thursday morning, March 1, at the Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha with Pastor Shane Spangler officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
