Al was born on March 30, 1929, the son of Guy Harkness Sr., and Anna Mae Tillotson in Union County, SD. He attended Sayles Country School. Read More	Obituary for Alvin 'Al' Lyman Harkness Alvin "Al" Lyman Harkness, 80, of Elk Point, SD, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2009, at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point. Al was born on March 30, 1929, the son of Guy Harkness Sr., and Anna Mae Tillotson in Union County, SD. He attended Sayles Country School. Al served in the army in the Korean Conflict from August of 1951 to July of 1953, earning the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He married Pauline Strand on October 24, 1954 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point. Al was employed by L.G. Everist in Hawarden, IA from 1953 until 1961. At that time, he started his own business, Harkness Sand & Gravel, later adding Ready Mix Concrete. He operated this business along with his wife for 26 years. After retiring, they moved to Sioux Falls and lived there from 1987 to 2007, when they moved to Elk Point. Al enjoyed restoring old cars and tractors. He also made cement yard ornaments as a hobby. He was a member of American Lutheran Church Council in Hawarden, IA, a life-time member of V.F.W. Post #915, and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point. He was survived by his wife, Pauline of Elk Point; his sisters, Bernice Dimmick of Hawarden, IA, and Beatrice Carroll, of Spokane, WA; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews.
