Vernon Wesley, third eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Harkness, residing west of here in Union county, S.D., passed away at the Akron Hospital, Saturday afternoon, February 1, 1936, at about 6 o'clock, following a long illness of pneumonia and complications, at the age of 17 years, 6 months and 23 days. Vernon was born in Union county, S.D., July 8, 1918, and has lived in this vicinity practically his entire life. His sudden summons came as a grievous shock to the family and to his many friends in the community. A loving son and a kind brother, his untimely departure will leave a place in that home which can never be filled. Vernon was a member of the Sophomore class of the Akron High school, and was well liked by his classmates and companions. He took an active part in High school football last fall. Sympathy is extended to his bereaved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Harkness, and his five brothers, Donald, Arnold, Guy, Jr., Alvin and Joyce, and five sisters, Mrs. Roy Dimmick, Betty, Beryl, Benita and Beatrice Harkness. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett, and a sister, Dorothy. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, at the First Baptist church, of Akron, conducted by Rev. R.E. Brown. The members of the Sophomore class attended the services, and the following classmates acted as pallbearers: Philip Aalfs, Darcy Fletcher, Earl Hultgren, Lester Bellwood, Lawrence Dague and LeRoy Burket. Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Harkness and son, Cecil, and Mr. and Mrs. Fay Rupe and daughter, Mildred, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Dimmick, of Ireton, Ia. His work on earth is ended, Though it's hard to understand; God has called him home to Heaven, To a fair and sweeter land. One peaceful thought still lingers In all this grief and strife, Vernon made the best of living In his sadly shortened life.
