Description	:	Anderson was the oldest son of Byard and Eleanor Hickman. He was born in Brooks County, VA (later West Virginia) in 1861. In 1862 his family moved to McDonough County, IL. When Anderson was four years old his father enlisted as a private in Company C of the 151st Illinois Volunteers, to serve in the Civil War. Read More	Anderson was the oldest son of Byard and Eleanor Hickman. He was born in Brooks County, VA (later West Virginia) in 1861. In 1862 his family moved to McDonough County, IL. When Anderson was four years old his father enlisted as a private in Company C of the 151st Illinois Volunteers, to serve in the Civil War. In 1866 the family moved to Wayne County, Iowa and began farming 40 acres near Wright Township. . In 1870 the Hickmans sold out and bought 160 acres in South Fork Township near Promise City, Iowa. By the mid 1880's, Anderson's father had 560 acres cultivated in Iowa and was engaged in cattle ranching. Anderson worked as a ranch hand and became an accomplished cowboy. In late 1886 the Hickman family went west as Colorado pioneers, homesteading in Kiowa County near the town of Chivington. Anderson followed his parents to Kiowa County and became a well known local cattleman. He married Mary Griffen of Osawtotomie, KS on March 9, 1909. His obituary read in part: "Anderson C. Hickman died at his mother's home last Wednesday after a lingering illness. He death was due to dropsy. Mr. Hickman will be remembered by many of the older residents as he spent most of his life in and about Eads, working on a number of ranches and owning cattle during the days of open range. For a number of years he was employed by the Government hauling provisions and other supplies to the Indians. He also spent some time in Arizona and spent three years in California a short time previous to his death. The last year Mr. Hickman has lived with his mother in Eads and spent the last days of his life among old friends." His mother posted the following thank you: "I wish to thank all of our kind friends who assisted during the almost five years of my son's illness and death, also for the flowers sent."
