Description	:	Ziza was the eighth child of Byard and Eleanor Hickman, born on their homestead farm near Promise City, Iowa in August of 1881. Three months after her birth the family home burned, killing her 7 year old sister Austella Nellie. Her family remained in Iowa until 1887, when her father decided to sell out their prospering 500 acre farm and create a new life for them in Eastern Colorado. Read More	Ziza was the eighth child of Byard and Eleanor Hickman, born on their homestead farm near Promise City, Iowa in August of 1881. Three months after her birth the family home burned, killing her 7 year old sister Austella Nellie. Her family remained in Iowa until 1887, when her father decided to sell out their prospering 500 acre farm and create a new life for them in Eastern Colorado. The family travelled by covered wagon, with the children often walking with cows as they made their way across the prairie. Byard established a cattle ranch just west of the town of Chivington in Kiowa County. Ziza's brothers became respected local cowboys and ranchers in their own right. She remained unmarried for most of her life. As a young woman she lived for brief periods in Denver and California, but remained home to help her mother care for her father as he neared the end of his life. She married Ed Low in 1917. He was 53, Ziza was 47. Ed worked as the Kiowa County Clerk, and was a severely disabled veteran of the Spanish American War. His injuries required care, and Ziza transitioned directly from caring for her father to caring for her new husband. The two of them ran the Goff hotel in Eads, and in 1919 they built the Rialto hotel. The Rialto was a 15 room, two story building with a second floor porch that ran the length of the building. The Rialto hotel prospered in the early 1920's, but Ed Low's health begin to decline. Ziza worked tirelessly to run the hotel and care for Ed, who became almost incapacitated. Ed died January 24, 1924, leaving Ziza grief stricken and exhausted. Her friends urged her to make a trip to Excelsior Springs, Missouri to recover her health. She was pessimistic and told a sister that she feared she would soon follow her husband in death. Doctors at Excelsior Springs found nothing wrong with her, but the nevertheless she became violently ill two weeks into her trip and died. She and Ed had no children, but the Rialto hotel remained for nearly 100 years in Eads before being demolished in 2017. From her obituary in the Eads newspaper: "Ziza was born in Promise City, Iowa August 8, 1881. When six years of age her family moved from Iowa to Colorado, settling on a homestead near Chivington. Several years of her life was spent in California and Denver before settling down in Eads to help care for her sick father. Seven years ago (1917) she was married to Ed Low of Eads. During the first two years of their marriage Mr. Low was County Clerk of Kiowa County until failing health demanded a change of occupation. Together they then built the Rialto Hotel and operated it until their deaths, which were separated by only six short weeks. After the death of her husband her left for Excelsior Springs 17 days before her death on Sunday March 2nd. During the first 12 days she was apparently recovering her usual health. Four days before the end she became suddenly ill, demanding the attention of a physician. The doctors declared however it was nothing serious and have hope of speedy recovery. Mrs. Bardwell of Excelsior Springs, at whose home Mrs. Low stayed, accompanied the body to Eads. She was a great comfort to the sorrowing mother in being able to tell her all of the circumstances of her daughter's sickness and death."
