Description	:	Byard was born in Wetzel County, VA (later West VA), the youngest child of Jacob Hickman and Nancy Byard. Byard's older siblings were George, Christian, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Mary. His father died when he was three months old. Byard left home at age 16 and came to Brooks County, VA, living there until the age of 21. He married Eleanor Jane Johnson (Johnston in some sources?) Read More	Byard was born in Wetzel County, VA (later West VA), the youngest child of Jacob Hickman and Nancy Byard. Byard's older siblings were George, Christian, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Mary. His father died when he was three months old. Byard left home at age 16 and came to Brooks County, VA, living there until the age of 21. He married Eleanor Jane Johnson (Johnston in some sources?) July 22nd, 1860, at Brooks County, VA. The bride and groom were 16 and 19 years old respectively. Their son Anderson was born in 1861. In 1862 the couple moved to McDonough County, IL. Their son William was born in 1863. In 1865 Byard enlisted as a private in Company C of the 151st Illinois Volunteers. His unit saw no action, occupying central Tennessee and Georgia following the defeat of the Confederacy. The 151st lost 51 men to disease during a year of operations. Byard is listed as "deserted" as of August 1865, but in 1890 he applied to have that status removed and collected a pension. After the war he returned to Illinois. In October of 1866 the family moved to Wayne County, Iowa and Byard began farming 40 acres near Wright Township. Their son, Thomas Edward "Ed", was born in 1866, as was their daughter, Margaret "Maggie" (Gish) in 1868. In 1870 they sold out and bought 160 acres in South Fork Township near Promise City, Iowa. Eleanor's parents, William and Margarita Johnson, followed them to Iowa. Susan "Susie" (Whelan), was born in 1870, followed by Austella N. in 1873. Their son Coral was born 1879. Their daughter Ziza (Low) was born in August of 1881. In November 1881 their daughter Austella died at age 7, a few days after suffering injuries in a house fire. By the mid 1880's, Byard had 560 acres "in good cultivation" in Wayne County, Iowa and was "successfully engaged in raising and feeding stock for market". He was active in the Seymour GAR chapter. (History of Wayne County, IA) Their youngest child, daughter Nellie (McKeever), was born in 1885. Eleanor's mother Margarita died in 1885 and was buried in Iowa. In late 1886 they decided to pack up the family and become Colorado pioneers. Their son William remained in Iowa, but the remaining children relocated with Byard and Eleanor. They travelled by covered wagon on the last leg of the journey, homesteading in Kiowa County near the town of Chivington in 1887. Their son, Coral, later recalled walking beside the covered wagon and a milk cow tied to the rear. Eleanor's father, William Johnson, followed them to Colorado, and died there in 1894. The Hickman place was located on the western side of Rush creek, just west of the town of Chivington and north of the main highway. They moved to the area by covered wagon because the Missouri Pacific Railroad had not yet been run through the area. When the railroad finally came, the originally planned route would have crossed through the Hickman's dining room. Byard successfully had the route altered to avoid his house. Byard worked as a farmer and cattle rancher. In addition to the cattle business, Byard was a skilled carpenter and built several houses in and around the town of Eads. Active in local politics, Byard served as Kiowa County Commissioner when the original Kiowa County Courthouse was built. The county seat had just moved from Sheridan Lake to Eads after a disputed election. Byard was among several Eads men who seized county records from Sheridan Lake and loaded them on a railroad flat car before transporting them to Eads. Byard and Eleanor spent a few years living in Kansas in the mid 1890's. They appear in the 1895 state census for Everett township in Woodson County, Kansas. Everett no longer exists, and the county seat of Woodson is Yates Center. By 1900 they were back in Kiowa County, CO. In 1910 he and Eleanor celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in Eads. Most of their family attended, with the exception of Ziza who was in California and Susie, who was living in Salt Lake City that year. In 1915 he bought a Ford Model T and enjoyed driving himself around at the age of 74. He stayed active in local politics and served as Coroner. He was instrumental in locating the current Eads cemetery, which rests on his old land. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and was a lifelong church goer. His obituary stated: "He answered the call of the west, locating on a homestead near Chivington where he and his family did a noble part in the pioneer development of a new land, the foundation work of western civilization. Few are the men who enjoy such a multitude of friends as did he and hundreds of hearts are sad to-day for the relatives in their loss of this fine old gentleman".
