Description	:	Ed was the son of Byard and Eleanor Hickman. He was born in Iowa in 1866 and grew up working his father's cattle ranch and farm. He came to Eads with his parents in the 1880's. He was a rancher and a cowboy, and met Teddy Roosevelt while he was touring the area. When his brother, Deputy Coral Hickman, was murdered by bank robbers on the highway east of Eads, Ed was the first on the scene. He found his brother laying face down in the road, shot six times but clinging to life. He... Read More	Ed was the son of Byard and Eleanor Hickman. He was born in Iowa in 1866 and grew up working his father's cattle ranch and farm. He came to Eads with his parents in the 1880's. He was a rancher and a cowboy, and met Teddy Roosevelt while he was touring the area. When his brother, Deputy Coral Hickman, was murdered by bank robbers on the highway east of Eads, Ed was the first on the scene. He found his brother laying face down in the road, shot six times but clinging to life. He died shortly after Ed arrived. Like his older brother Anderson, Ed married very late in life, marrying Sarah Beltz in 1923 at the age of 57. The couple had no children. His obituary read in part: "LARGE CROWD ATTENDS LAST RITES FOR AGED KIOWA COUNTY PIONEER: A large crowd of friends, neighbors, and relatives who mourn the loss of one of our pioneer citizens, Thomas Edward Hickman, gathered at the Methodist church in Eads to pay their tribute of respect. A quartet sang "Under His Wing" a, "Blessed Savior", and "Nearer Still Nearer". Honorary pallbearers were W. Bailey, CW Sweitzer, FQ Kirkpatrick, RJ McGrath, FC Sherman, and CE Tracy. Pallbearers were WK France, WS Pearcey, CE Hightower, Kelley Jackson, PO Meyer, and Frand Risser. " "T.E. Hickman was affectionately known as "Ed" to his many friends was 75 years old on the 19th day of May of last year. He came to Kiowa county as a young man over 51 years ago and until recent years was engaged in stock raising and as a cattle buyer. On April 19, 1923 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah Beltz. He was known far and wide in this section of the state, having spent many years riding the range in the olden days. Mr. Hickman had been in failing health for several years, but his final illness was only of a few weeks duration. He passed away at his home on October 15, 1941 at the age of 75 years. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Hickman, of Eads, and two sisters, Mrs. John Gish of Eads and Mrs. John Whelan of San Bernardino, CA. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Eads. Burial was made in Eads cemetery."
