For the past week or ten days death seemed imminent at any moment. The patient had not been able to take food even in liquid form for a number of days and only his vigorous constitution and unusual vitality kept the vital spark glowing so long. Andrew Clark was a son of the late John Clark, who was the first settler of Spring Creek township. He was born Nov. 13, 1836, and therefore lacked one day of being 68 years old. He was a native of Bedford county, Pennsylvania. He came to Black Hawk county with his parents in 1852, settling one mile east of where Mr. Clark had just died. In the John Clark family there were eight children, of which Andrew was the fifth child. He was reared a farmer and what education he had was procured in the country schools. He was married Sept. 4, 1857, to Sarah A. Masters, a native of Pennsylvania. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Clark, but only two survive, both daughters. Elliott Clark, the only son, was accidentally killed while hunting several years ago near his home. His tragic death caused impenetrable gloom to engulf the heart of the father, as he was a bright young man of unusual promise. Mr. Clark was considered to be quite wealthy, having obtained considerable land in an early day in Spring Creek township. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Spring Creek cemetery and will be in charge of Rev. J.C. Kepford of Independence.
