(Special.) -- George Clark, who came to Spring Creek township in 1852, being one of the first settlers of the county died at his home here at 5 o'clock this morning after a long illness with dropay. For the past few days his death was momentarily expected. Three of his children were at his bedside. The funeral services will be held from the home at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. O. Kepford; an old friend and former neighbor, assisted by Rev. Mr. Rodgers, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Spring Creek cemetery. The surviving relatives are the wife, four children - William Clark of Clarkston, Wash., Mrs. W.M. Robe of Waterloo, Joseph Clark of Waterloo and Thurman Clark, who resides on the old homestead in Spring Creek township. The brother and sisters surviving are William Clark of Waterloo, Mrs. Daniel Teeter of Spring Creek township and Mrs. John Howrey of La Porte City. Came Here When County Was New. Mr. Clark was born Oct. 20, 1827 at Bedford, PA. and was in his 85th year. He migrated to Iowa in 1852, settling in the wooded tract in Spring Creek township near Spring Creek. His father was John Clark who owned several yoke of oxen and broke much of the virgin sod of that part of the county. The father located on a good-sized tract of land, and his children acquired extensive farm land holdings. The Clark family has been prominent for sixty years in the development of the county, and George Clark did his full measure in transforming the native timber land into fertile and productive fields. Mr. Clark was twice married. His first wife was Christina Watson, and they were married in 1849. She passed away Dec. 15, 1887 and his second marriage was with Miss Emma Maldzahn of Waterloo, and she survives. For the past five years Mr. Clark had lived in retirement in this city. Two years ago he and his wife made a long trip to the Pacific coast and through Canada. This was considered quite an undertaking for a man of his age but he stood the journey well. During all his life Mr. Clark was an active man. He knew full well what it meant to pioneer and to convert the land from its wild state to one of the highest degree of cultivation. His arduous physical toll in young manhood only made his health more robust and his muscles firmer. Because of his busy life in the open air he was a man who possessed a rugged and hardy constitution. The disease which finally overcame his strength manifested itself first about two years ago. Mr. Kepford, who is to give the funeral address, was himself a pioneer of Buchanan and Black Hawk counties. He is about 74 years of age, but is in good health. He has officiated in times of joy and sorrow at marriages and funerals for the pioneer families for the past fifty years. Very few bodies have been laid to rest in the Spring Creek cemetery at which this early day preacher of the Gospel did not officiate. [Waterloo Courier, August 23, 1911 - Page 8]
