Description	:	Stratford Courier September 20, 1917 Mrs. John S. Olson or "Grandma" Olson, as she was known among her friends, was born in Enviken (Svärdsjö) Parish, Dalarne, Sweden, October 19, 1835. She was united in marriage to J.S. Olson on October 29, 1852 at the early age of seventeen years, in Sweden and had been married for sixty-five years. In the spring of 1868 the couple left their native land and embarked for America and on June 24, 1868 settled on a farm in Boone County, southwest of Stratford. Olson or "Grandma" Olson, as she was known among her friends, was born in Enviken (Svärdsjö) Parish, Dalarne, Sweden, October 19, 1835. She was united in marriage to J.S. Olson on October 29, 1852 at the early age of seventeen years, in Sweden and had been married for sixty-five years. In the spring of 1868 the couple left their native land and embarked for America and on June 24, 1868 settled on a farm in Boone County, southwest of Stratford. In 1903 they moved to Stratford where they have since lived and where the deceased departed this life Friday morning, September 14, 1917. She had lived to the ripe age of nearly eighty-two years, being on the day passing 81 years, 10 months, 23 days old. Four children were born to them - three sons and one daughter. The daughter, Mrs. J.H. Johnson, and two sons, Eric and Andrew, have preceded her to the great beyond. One son, J.W. Olson, of southeast of Stratford, is left with her loving husband and a number of grandchildren are left to mourn her passing. ON April 5, 1890 she united with the Swedish Mission Church at Swede Bend. Deceased was one of the early pioneers of this country. For very nearly a half century she lived on Iowa soil coming here when the state was one vast wilderness and wild prairie land. She was one of those hardy settlers who combined her efforts with those of her husband and made for themselves and their children a home on Iowa's fertile prairies. The hardships of that day were many and in common with the early settler of fifty years ago she endured privations which are today unthought of. For several years her health has been failing heart trouble and complications due to her advanced age being the chief causes of her illness but all through her sickness she has been a patient sufferer bearing her pain with the fortitude of a martyr. Possessed of a kind and loving disposition she made many friends during her long life among us many of whom came to pay their last respects to a departed friend. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church at 1:30 and the remains laid to rest in the Swede Bend cemetery. She had lived long and performed many kind acts and her memory will linger.
