The Atchison Daily Globe, 28 Feb 1898, Mon, Page 1 Mrs. Anna Keeler, wife of Wenzel Keeler, was found dead early this morning near their home eight miles nortwest of Atchison. She came to her death in a very unusual way, probably from exposure. Her body was found beside the road leading from the main road to the Keeler farm house, her clothing being wet and muddy. She was seen last alive about 8 o'clock last evening. It was suppossed she went to her bedroom, and she was not missed until this morning. There is a fish pond on the Keeler place and there is a supposition that she threw herself into it with suicidal intent; that she then changed her mind and got out, but fell exhausted from exposure beside the road. She was 61 years of age, and was at Huron yesterday with one of her sons. Just before she left the house last night, her husband, in the company with of a grown son and daughter, had been joking her about money matters. It is supposed that she took offense at something said, and became despondent over it. Coroner Copp investigated the case today, and does not think an inquest necessary. Between the pond and the house there is a steep hill. Dr. Copp believes that Mrs. Keeler, after climbing the hill in her wet clothing (she was heavily dressed) sat down to rest, and became exhausted. The Keelers and became exhausted. The Keelers are very well-to-do, and highly respected.
