Born on April 5, 1908 at Houghton, she had been a lifelong resident of that community. After teaching school from 1922 to 1945, she became owner and operator of Mertens store in Houghton. She also served as postmaster at Houghton from 1947 until her death. She was a member of St. John's Catholic church, Houghton, the Altar and Rosary Society of that parish, and the Iowa Postmasters Organization. Miss Mertens never married. She was the daughter of the late Peter Mertens and Elizabeth Bentler Mertens. Surviving are one brother Adrian Mertens, of Burlington, and four sisters: Mrs. Harry (Elizabeth) Nichting, Houghton; Mrs. Joseph (Christine) Proctor, Houghton; Sister Mary Pierre, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Pomberg, Houghton. She is also survived by a number of nephews and nieces. One brother preceded her in death. Rosaries were said at the Link Funeral Home on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. by the Altar and Rosary Society and on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. by the parish. The funeral will be held on October 7 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Catholic church in Houghton, with burial in St. John's cemetery. Officiating minister is Rev. Albert Goetzman. Pallbearers are Harold Nichting, Harold Hunold, Tom Pomberg, Francis Pomberg, William Mertens and Robert Mertens.
