Description	:	Adrian (Mert) Mertens, 57, of West Burlington, died Thursday morning, January 23, at the Danville Community Home, Danville, Iowa. A native of Houghton, he was born December 31, 1917. His parents were Peter and Elizabeth Bentler Mertens. He farmed for a number of years in the Houghton area and later worked in transportation at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant. He married Ruth Denning on December 28, 1944, who survives. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church in West Burlington, the Long Creek Conservation club, and the Knights of Columbus at Burlington. His parents were Peter and Elizabeth Bentler Mertens. He farmed for a number of years in the Houghton area and later worked in transportation at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant. He married Ruth Denning on December 28, 1944, who survives. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church in West Burlington, the Long Creek Conservation club, and the Knights of Columbus at Burlington. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Corrine Wolbert, Burlington; two sons, William Mertens of Denmark and Lt. Robert Mertens, Fort Ord, California; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Nichting and Mrs. Christine Proctor, both of Houghton, Mrs. Marie Pomberg, Salem, Mrs. Mary Pierre, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and four grandchildren. His parents, a brother and sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were performed at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John Catholic church at Houghton. The Rev. Joseph Denning and the Rev. Albert Goetzman officiated. Burial was held in Houghton cemetery. Rosaries were recited Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 in the Lunning Chapel at Burlington, who were in charge of funeral arrangements. A memorial for the cancer fund has been established, contributions were left at the Lunning Chapel.
