Description	:	Peter Mertens, a well known and prominent farmer of near Houghton, passed away at Sacred Heart hospital at Fort Madison, Tuesday, August 2, 1927 at 4:10 a.m., after an illness of several months. At the time of his death he was 54 years, 4 months and 19 days of age. Mr. Mertens was a lifelong rsident of the county. Read More	Peter Mertens, a well known and prominent farmer of near Houghton, passed away at Sacred Heart hospital at Fort Madison, Tuesday, August 2, 1927 at 4:10 a.m., after an illness of several months. At the time of his death he was 54 years, 4 months and 19 days of age. Mr. Mertens was a lifelong rsident of the county. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Mertens and was born in Marion township, west of St. Paul, on March 13, 1873. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bentler on September 11, 1900. This union was blessed with six children. Mr. Mertens folowed the occupation of farming all his life. Mr. Mertens is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Mertens, four daughters, Elizabeth, Christina, Anna and Marie, and one son, Adrian, all at home. Also six sisters, Mrs. Mary Pomberg of West Point, Mrs. John Meierotto of St. Paul, Mrs. Chris Meierotto and Mrs. Casper Meierotto, both of near Houghton, Mrs. John Denning of West Point, Mrs. Wm. Menke of Salem and one brother, Bernard Mertens, whose whereabouts are unknown. Mr. Mertens was a member of St. John's church at Houghton and also a member of the Men's Society of that parish. He was a man of the highest integrity and was held in the highest esteem, not only in the comunity in which he lived, but all over the county. He will be sadly missed in the home as he was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor. Funeral services will be held at St. John's church at Houghton Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. Father Adam will officiate and interment will be made in St. John's cemetery.
