Finally, he settled in Shelby county, Iowa, on a farm. He was married to Miss Gertrude Whaley, Jan. 30, 1881. To them two daughters were born: Mrs. Charles Scott, of Loveland, Colo., Mrs. Arthur Phillips, of Reserve. In 1902, he moved to Brown county, settling on the home farm near Padonia. About two years ago, his health began to fail and he has never been well since. Everything was done that could be done. Wednesday morning, March 15, he was taken to St. Joseph, Mo., for medical examination und treatment. He was found to have ulcers of the stomach. They expected to operate to give him relief, but on Sunday, March 19, he developed pneumonia, which resulted in his death at 11:20 p. m. Wednesday, March 22, 1922. Mr. Hillyer was a kind, loving husband" and father, noble citizen, a fine neighbor and friend. He will be greatly missed in the community where he has lived so long. The near relatives left are his devoted wife, two daughters, three granddaughters, two sisters, Miss Emma Hillyer and Mrs. Sarah Frye, both of Hiawatha, besides a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Rev. L. L. Hassenpflug. A quartet composed of Mrs. Dwight Grove, Mrs. Albert Gilmore, Rev. A. C. Stewart and Chester Jones sang "God Will Take Care of You," "The City Four Square," and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." The body bearers were Ira E. Hillyer, Jones Hillyer, Ralph Hillyer, Fred Hillyer, Roy and David Hillyer, all nephews of the deceased. He was laid to rest in the Hiawatha cemetery amid a bank of beautiful flowers.
