Description	:	Arabella Hazel Comer was born in July of 1869 in Hurricane, Carroll County Missouri to Richard B Comer and Mary B Shumate. She always was known in adult life as Hazel. She had two siblings Elizabeth Agnes and Robert Edgar Comer. Her father died between 1870 and 1880 and her mother, Mary, married Benjamin Franklin Smith in 1880. B F Smith was a widower with 12 children. One of those children, his son James Chalmers Smith married Mary's eldest daughter Elizabeth Agnes "Lizzie" Comer. Ketterman's first wife), John was building in downtown Pittsburg when a statuesque young lady passed under his ladder. John always fancied himself a ladies' man, and within weeks he and Abella Hazel Comer (always called Hazel) were married. John was 17 years older than his bride. From "The Fifteen Children of John W. Certainly John's children from his first marriage did not get along with her at all. When they would visit (or later, when some of them moved back in with their father for a short time), she would act as if they just weren't there. However, her own children were very much devoted to her, and they paint a picture of a very caring individual--one who even put flowers on her predecessor's grave.
