She was their second child, but because her older sister died in infancy, she grew up as the oldest child in the family. Her middle name, Bryona, was probably a reference to the previous year's Democratic presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan. Verna was a busy industrious person, the kind of girl that everyone liked. She does not seem to have graduated from high school, but during the Depression she worked at a Pittsburg department store. For a long time she dated a rather portly young man named Adolph. Both Verna and Adolph liked kids, and Adolph delighted the neighborhood children by driving his tiny Austin automobile right up the sidewalk. Adolph even played Santa for Verna's little niece, and everyone assumed the twosome would marry one day. But unlike her siblings, Verna was in no hurry to leave home. In fact, it appears she deliberately postponed marriage to care for her aging parents. It was not until she was almost 44 years old and her mother's affairs had been concluded that Verna married for the first time. The Kettermans all liked Verna's husband, Jules LaBenne (Pronounced La-Bean), but he was almost certainly a surprise choice. Jules was of French Belgian decent and while he had spent his share of time underground, by the early 1940s he wa an owner or manager with Western Coal Mining in Franklin, KS. It seems likely that Jules left his first wife to marry Verna. The two were wed March 2, 1941 in Springfield, MO, and their marriage seems to have been a happy one. The LaBennes settled in Lamar, MO, where they owned and operated a number of business, including a grocery store, a TV repair shop, and a laundromat. Jules also served as a police Judge. Verna was active in the Eastern Star, the Social Order of the Beauceant, and she served as president of the Business and professional Womens' Club. Verna was the one member of the Ketterman who kept up with many of her full and half-siblings. However, sh was far too busy to visit often; instead she invited the relatives to visit her. Verna never had children of her own, but her young relatives looked forward to working alongside "Aunt Bern" for a week or two every summer. In the early 1970s Verna even invited her half-brother Romney's widow to visit for a week. Lottie had looked forward to the trip, but once there, she was irritated that Verna was too busy to visit. Lottie came home several days earlier than she had planned. Jules LaBeene died in Lamar, MO on September 7, 1976. Verna buried him in the Ketterman plot Pittsburg's Highland Park cemetery, then decided to move back to Pittsburg herself. she spent the last few years of her life at 617 1/2 N. Broadway. Verna took ill in September 1979 and moved into a nursing home attached to Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg. She passed away on January 2, 1980, ten years to the day after her half-brother Romney. Verna was the last surviving child of John W. Ketterman."
