Marcus was the smallest and slightest of the Ketterman boys. The 1930 census showed Marcus living at home and working as a baker. However in late 1933, Marcus' 18-year-old girlfriend, Dorothy O'Connell, discovered she was expecting a baby. The couple was granted a marriage license on December 22, 1933 and they were married on Christmas Eve. Like many people, Dorothy did not care for Marcus' intimidating father, but he passed away less than two months into their marriage. Dorothy did find Marcus to be a good husband, and the young couple welcomed Marcus Leroy into their home on July 31, 1934. But times were hard and although Marcus found sporadic work, the young couple had to move often. By 1935 the couple was living at 915 Washington and the next year at 221 E. 3rd. The shortage of money caught up with the couple in another way. When little Marcus took ill in April 1936, they put off calling the doctor. Dr. Montez finally saw the baby on April 17th and diagnosed scarlet fever. Marcus Leroy died the next day and buried the day after, age one year eight months. There was no funeral. Within weeks, though, Dorothy was expecting again and little John W. Ketterman was born February 11, 1937. He was named for his paternal grandfather, who had died almost exactly three years before. Marcus found a steady job at Pittsburg's Commercial fuel Company and he settled his family into a tiny cottage at 605 N. warren, just down the block from his mother and brothers. For a while it seemed as if things were looking up. But on November 5, 1937, Marcus worked all day despite feeling ill. He went to bed early, but became irrational soon after. He was dead at 5:55 the next morning, the victim of spinal meningitis. He was 25 years old and his widow only 21. After Marcus was buried in the Pittsburg's Highland Park Cemetery, the Kettermans tried to get Dorothy to give them her baby. She refused and broke off all ties with the Ketterman family. She married twice more but neither marriage was particularly happy.
