She was an unusually tall girl who left school early to work in a Pittsburg department store. Esther apparently lived at home until she married Victor C. Graeber sometime between 1930 and 1935. Victor was five years' Esther's senior and he had first married back in 1919. Even as late as the 1930 census, Victor was a manager with Standard Oil and living with his first wife in Webb City, MO. He must have left that first wife to marry Esther, although I have not been able to verify exactly what happened. In 1935, Esther and Victor were living in Denver, CO, but by 1937 they were in Kansas City, and they stayed there at least through 1940. AS war jobs opened up in the west, they moved to California. They also persuaded Betty Ketterman (Esther's niece) to leave Oklahoma for a "Rosie the Riveter" job in the huge shipyards. Betty was recently divorced and thought her toddler son Jim Askew with her. The Graebers were childless and doted on little Jim, bringing him treats and taking him on outings to the beach. At one point they wanted to adopt Him, but after some consideration Betty turned them down. She felt they drank too much to be responsible parents. After the war Betty moved back to Oklahoma, but Esther and Victor stayed on in California. Victor took civilian jobs at nearby military bases. Esther died in Sacramento, CA on August 31, 1962. She is buried in the Ketterman plot in the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg.
