He was known to reach for his razor strop or his shotgun whenever he felt someone needed to be taught a lesson. Many of his older children grew up refusing to have anything to do with him, and his younger children called him "The Old Man," never Father or Dad. By the age of 18, Jonathan had given up his birth name (which he hated) and ever after went by the first name John or Jack. As a young man he had an argument with his father and left Pendleton County, West Virginia for Campaign County, Illinois, where some Ketterman relatives had already settled. John found work as a carpenter and sometime in the 1870s he met a young lady named Nannie Walker Nannie had been born Nancy Jane (or Louisa) Walker, the third child of the prosperous Farmers George Stingley Walker and his wife Carolyn McKillip Walker. ... On March 28, 1877 the 18 year-old Nannie married 25-year-old John W. Ketterman at her father's home. The young couple set up housekeeping in Foosland, IL., where they shared a home with Nannie's brother Elwood and his wife Phoebe. John found some intermittent carpentry work, but money was very tight. Minnie, their first child, was born in 1879. Harold was born and died in 1881, and Guy arrived in 1882... Somtime around 1884, Nannie and John decided to move to Pittsburg, KS, a booming coal-mining town of about 5,000 in southeast Kansas. Nannie had several siblings farming in the area (near Girard and Later Moran, KS), and Pittsburg's rapid growth would mean plenty of carpentry work. A forth child, Chloe, was born in Nebraska as the family headed toward their new home. ... Despite the fact that Kansas was supposed to be a dry state, there were plenty of saloons, dance halls, and brothels operating quite openly. Nannie became a leader in the Pittsburg W.C.T.U. (Woman's Christian Temperance Union). She also gave birth to three more children. Grover, Romney, and Durward. In Late 1892, however, both Nannie and John came down with what has been identified as pneumonia, although it may have been something else. Nannie died on November 13th, leaving a very sick husband and six children, ages 2 to 13. The W.C.T.U. made her funeral an elaborate one and laid her to rest in Pittsburg's Mt. Olive Cemetery. Immediately afterwords the children were split up. Minnie apparently stayed with her father, all the other children were parceled out to Walker relatives. About a year later, a recovered John was building in downtown Pittsburg when a statuesque young lady from Missouri passed under his ladder. John always fancied himself as a ladies' man, and within weeks he and Abella Hazel Comer (always called Hazel) were married. John was seventeen years older than his bride. Exactly what Hazel was like depends on who you spoke with. Certainly John's children from his fist marriage did not get along with her at all. When they would visit (or later when some of them moved back in with their father for a short time), she would act as if they just weren't' there. However, her own children were very much devoted to her, and they paint a picture of a very caring individual--one who even put flowers on her predecessor's grave. The children started arriving soon after the wedding and they did not stop arriving for many years. The first, Vera, was born in 1895, and died 19 months later. After her came Verna, born in 1897, Lois, born and died in 1898; John Robert, born in 1900; Esther, born in 1904; Paul, born in 1910; and Marcus, born in 1912. In between at least three of the children from the first family--Chloe, Romney, and Derward--spent a few years with their father as well. The youngest child, Woody, was born in 1914, When Hazel was 45 and John was 62... John Ketterman was definitely the master of his household and he put a high value of hard work and family loyalty. He expected his to do exactly what he said, when he said it. Any money any of the children earned was the family's, and not the individual's. Education was far less of a priority. John frequently kept his children out of school to work, and only two (Romney and Paul) are believed to have graduated from high school. John was also a man of habits. He rose early in the morning and read his Bible every day. He loved his workshop, his garden, and his beehives. He demanded a tasty meal every day, and was known to leave to eat downtown if what was being served was not to his liking. On Sundays he would sit on the front porch, wearing his best suit, singing hymns, greeting neighbors and at the same time cursing them under his breath. John was an active healthy 82-year-old man right up until his death on February 24, 1934. Cause of death was listed as double pneumonia. Hazel passed away on July 13, 1940. They are buried in the Ketterman family plot in the Highland Cemetery, Pittsburg, Kansas." Used with permission form Barbara Ketterman Pendleton.
