Read More	St. Joseph News-Press (Mo) - January 9, 2004 HIAWATHA, Kan. -- Arthur Leroy Winter, 84, of Hiawatha, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. Art was born May 29, 1919, on a farm north of Robinson, Kan., one of four children born to William F. and Clara (Steffen) Winter and was a lifelong Brown County, Kan., resident. He grew up on the farm, attended Robinson schools and graduated there in 1937. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II and discharged at the rank of lieutenant in 1946. Art returned to the farm, where he farmed and raised livestock with his father and brother, retiring in 1984. Mr. Winter was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church, northeast of Robinson; prior to transferring his membership to the First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. He was a member of Hiawatha Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1741; Hedrick-Moll American Legion Post No. 148, Robinson; and RC Propbusters of Hiawatha. He was a past board member of the Hiawatha Community Hospital and Robinson Farmers Cooperative. He married Betty Strahan on Jan. 14, 1949, at the Zion church. They moved to Hiawatha in 1988 from the farm. She survives of the home in Hiawatha. Also surviving are a daughter, Nancy Weingart, and husband, John, Hiawatha; two sons, Steven Winter, and wife, Milana, Las Vegas, Nev.; and James Winter, and wife, Lea, Topeka, Kan.; sister, Louise Schwanke, Scott City, Kan.; brother, Wilbur "Wib" Winter, rural Robinson; six grandchildren, Levi Winter, Jacob Winter, Elizabeth Weingart, Emily Weingart, Sara Weingart and Annie Weingart; and five step grandchildren, Maren Hilgert, Tara Hilgert, Jay Hilgert, Gina Hefner and Jerad Hefner. Art was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lillian Winter. The funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the First United Methodist Church, Hiawatha. Pastor Frank Pritz will officiate. Interment will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Note: Arthur L. Winter is s/o William F. Winter, a Frederick Anton Winter descendant.
