Overman after three years of suffering at his home on East Fourth Street in this city, Thursday evening, June 3, 1915 at 7:05 o’clock. He was 68 years, one month, and 10 days. Mr. Overman, who was one of the early pioneers of this county and was widely known in this section of the country, was stricken with paralysis June 29, 1912, and had been an invalid since. He managed to get some enjoyment out of life, however, and with the aid of a wheel chair got around to a limited extent. During all the time his wife was his constant companion and attendant, and she left nothing undone to minister to his wants. A week ago Sunday, he was taken with a couple of spasms and his condition gradually became worse. Part of the time he was unconscious. The direct cause of death is said to have been diabetes. Mr. Overman was born in Highland County, Ohio, April 28, 1947 and was one of a large family of brothers and sisters. While yet a lad his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Overman, emigrated to Iowa and settled on what is known as the Sam Oyster farm north of Villisca. The elder Mr. Overman paid $7 an acre for 80 acres of this tract which he bought from James Sanburn. At that time there was very little semblance of a town here, and no railroad at all. The trip west made by wagon train, was long and tedious, and the party nearly froze to death coming from Savannah, Missouri, north. At Villisca they found the river full to the banks and frozen over, and the party had great trouble to in getting through the ice. As time progressed, the family grew in numbers and in strength and at one time owned more than 400 acres of what is now considered the best agricultural land in the world. When the great Civil War broke out, Asa was but a lad of thirteen years and on account of his youth was not permitted to enlist, but he wanted to go, and finally with two other boys ran away to St. Jospeh, from which point he was brought back to Villisca. The other boys succeeded in their undertaking, however and one of them came home death and the other nearly so. From that time on Mr. Overman devoted most of his time to farming. On August 27, 1879, he was married to Miss Susan Jane Brenton, who also came to this country in an early day, the ceremony having been performed by Rev. W. W. Merritt, at his home east of Red Oak. Mrs. Overman lived on the Gardner ranch of 500 acres prior to her marriage. Early in life Mr. Overman, whole denied the privilege of a higher education, so called, became addicted to the habit of reading, and on matters of religion and politics had his opinions which were always of a progressive nature. He conceded to every other man the right to think as he pleased and he reserved this right for himself. He was a life long Republican and then took up with the Progressive cause and at the age of sixty was a younger man in spirit than many half his age in years. His religious faith was that of the Universalist. He also belonged to the Odd Fellows and Masonic orders. To show the nature of the man who never allowed himself to grow old, even as late as 1909, he took Horace Greeley’s advice for the second time and decided to go west and “begin all over.” Having drawn a claim in Tripp County, South Dakota, he and Mrs. Overman emigrated to that country, and agin became pioneers for some fifteen months. Eventually they returned to Villisca, however, and have lived her since, respected and beloved by all who knew them. They also lived in Pierce County, Nebraska, for a time, where Mr. Overman owned a farm of 160 acres. It is said that had he not sold this place when he died he would have been independently rich a few years later. Mr. and Mrs. Overman had no children, and this fact brought them into closer companionship as they grew older each year. Mrs. Overman waited on her husband in late years and ever left his side. Beside the wife Mr. Overman is survived by three brothers and one sister; Mrs. Amu Stipe of California, Border Overman of the home, and Aaron and Therson Overman of Villisca. The deceased brothers and Joseph, Isaac, John, Elijah, Jr. Nancy and Phoebe. Funeral services will be held at the M. E. Church in this city Sunday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Rev. E. S.
