Visitation was Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Avis Rosnell (Twedt) Torberson was born November 15, 1907 in Lincoln County, South Dakota, the daughter of Ed and Thea (Storkson) Twedt. She was baptized at Romsdal Lutheran Church and confirmed at Canton Lutheran Church. She graduated from Canton High School and received her two-year degree at Canton Lutheran Normal in business and music. An accomplished pianist, she played solos, as well as duets with her sister, Gena, at several area events. On January 4, 1931, Avis married Ernest C. Torberson at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where they lived for 13 years. They moved to the Ole T. Torberson homestead farm in the Grand Valley area, southwest of Canton, in 1940. The couple raised their family on the farm, doing chores and working in the fields together as a family. Avis enjoyed farm life, homemaking, caring for and canning her vegetables and fruits from her 2 acre garden, and raising chickens. During winters, she made quilts with her quilting club. She was active in church, teaching Sunday School and participating in Ladies Aid. In 1974, Ernest and Avis moved to Canton, where she volunteered at Canton Good Samaritan Center, and received her 20 year RSVP pin and certificate. Following her husband's death on July 21, 1993, continued to live at her home with her daughter, Sharon Ann. They later moved to Sioux Falls, where they lived with her daughter, Mila Mae, and her husband, Don, for four years. She has been a resident at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford for the past 2 ½ years, since falling and breaking her hip. Those thankful for having shared her life are: two daughters – Sharon Ann Torberson and Mila Mae Lambert and her husband, Don, all of Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Dennis, and his wife, Kathy, of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Gena Iverson, of Seattle, WA; one brother, Frances Twedt, of Mitchell, SD; and several nieces and nephews and other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest; two brothers – Ernest Twedt and baby Ernest; and one sister, Ellen Thompson.
