Description	:	The following is taken from an article published in the Seneca Courier, dated Thursday, August 4, 1904. The residents of St. Benedict were startled and shocked on Friday evening to learn that Barney Engelken, one of the popular and highly respected young men of that neighborhood had been instantly killed. The residents of St. Benedict were startled and shocked on Friday evening to learn that Barney Engelken, one of the popular and highly respected young men of that neighborhood had been instantly killed. That day he was helping his uncle, John Engelken, take care of his hay crop. It was between 5 and 6 o'clock when the accident which resulted fatally occurred. He had loaded his wagon, and with a younger brother was driving to the place near the house where the crop was being stored or stacked. They were driving along a road at the end of the corn field. On one side was the corn field and on the other a wire fence. When nearing his destination the loaded wagon turned over or upset, the lad going onto the wire fence with the hay was not injured. Barney, it appears, decided to jump to the other side. In doing so, he struck the standard of the wagon, which was made of a piece of hard wood inclined to a blunt point, which was not covered with iron. The standard entered his body and penetrated the lungs. He loosened himself from the stick which pierced him and walked but a few steps and fell upon his face, dead. It is a sad and awful accident, taking from the family and community an exemplary and industrious young man, highly respected and admired by neighbors and friends for his many manly and sterling qualities. Barney Engelken was a son of Mr and Mrs Herman Engelken, and was in the twenty-seventh year of his age.
