Early Day Citizen of Montana Passes Away; Many Years in Cattle Business Fort Benton, Nov. 25--Fort Benton, mother town for many of Montana's pioneers, stops again to pay tribute to one departed. Death called Malcolm Morrow, Sr., at 10:30 o'clock Friday morning and in his passing there is called beyond a pioneer well known to all in northern Montana. Mr. Morrow was 71 years of age and had spent most of his life in and around this city. His early day activities were filled with hardships and narrow escapes which characterized early day life. He was born in Perth, Canada, Feb. 8, 1850. When a young man the family moved to Denver, Colorado, and again to Montana in 1863. They located in Fort Benton in in 1879. Malcolm was the oldest of 10 children. Early in life he entered the cattle business and though he at times ventured into various pursuits, he considered cattle raising his biggest business enterprise and at times owned large herds of cattle and horses. Similar to other Montana pioneers, he spent time in Alder and Last Chance gulches and participated in the early day gold rushes. During the spring of 1865 Mr. Morrow did a large amount of freighting and many were his adventures with hostile Indians. Mr. Morrow was married at Helena July 25, 1875, to Mary Ann Travis, and eight children were born. Mrs. Morrow died last month and the loss of his cherished mate was largely instrumental in hastening his own death, though Mr. Morrow had been in declining health for some time. During the late years of his life, Mr. Morrow had been associated with his sons in the cattle and ranch business. He had also been the president of the Benton Drug company for many years, a successful business which is managed by his son, Leonard H. Morrow. Immediate relatives of Mr. Morrow consist of the family of eight children, Malcolm Morrow, Jr., Cascade; Mrs. J.W. Lenning, Warren T. Morrow, and Dewey Morrow, all of Fort Benton; Mrs. Walter Thorne of Los Angeles; Mrs. Isabel Baker of Minot, N.D.; and Mrs. Harry Whitcomb of Malta. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. James Adams of Sun River, and Mrs. David Frields of Fort Benton, and two brothers, William T. Morrow of Fort Benton and David Morrow of Kalispell. The community joins with the family in mourning the loss of this intrepid pioneer who was a loving husband and father and who carried well his part in the carving of the state of Montana from the wilderness of the northwest. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the home on Main street. The body will be interred in Riverside cemetery.
