Ricketts Struck by Train and Killed. Miss Bessie E. Ricketts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses M. Ricketts of Rockville, Md., shortly after 6 0'clock last evening was struck by a Baltimore and Ohio train while near the depot here. She died a few minutes later. Miss Ricketts had just left her father, who accompanied her from home to the railway station, and walked along the depot platform on the way to visit friends as train No. 51 from Washington approached. After the train had stopped to let off passengers the form of the young lady was noticed by the brakeman alongside the tracks at the end of the platform. She was carried into the ladies' waiting room and Drs. Lewis and Anderson summoned, but before the physicians arrived she died. An examination showed Miss Ricketts sustained bruises on the right cheek and all along her right side and that her right arm was crushed at the elbow. From the position of the body when found and the character of the injuries it is believed that she was struck by one of the coaches and that she probably stumbled toward the train as she stepped from the end of the platform to the ground. Her death, it is thought, was due to shock. Miss Ricketts was about twenty years of age. For the last few months she had been employed in the government printing office and intended returning to her work this morning after spent several days visiting her parents at Rockville. She possessed an unusually bright mind, was a young lady of fine character and was popular with a wide circle of acquaintances. The news of her death and the sad circumstances surrounding it proved a great shock to the community. Since her employment in the government printing office she had made her home with her uncle, Charles W. Ricketts, at 121 Maryland avenue. The misfortune is said to be the second Mr. Ricketts has suffered from railroad accidents. Many years ago, while driving across the railroad track near where his daughter was killed, his vehicle was struck by an express train, killing his first wife, hurling him over a bank fifty feet away, killing his horse and smashing the vehicle to splinters. The Washington Herald - December 29, 1907 TRAIN CAUSE HER DEATH Coroner Decides in Case of Rockville Girl - Funeral Tomorrow ROCKVILLE, Md., Dec. 28. An autopsy upon the body of Miss Bessie Ricketts, who was killed at the railroad station here last evening, developed the fact that her right arm was broken, her right side body bruised, and that she had received internal injuries. Investigation has established beyond a doubt that she was struck by a train, but in what manner is still mystery. No one can be found who witnessed the accident. The funeral will take place at 11 o'clock Monday morning.
