In 1900, the Rodens were living in St. John Township, Harrison County, Iowa. Her father was a farmer. The 1900 US Census lists: William T. Roden, 60, b. Mississippi, farmer Sarah E. Roden, 55, b. Ohio, wife John W. Roden, 19, b. Iowa, son, farm laborer Mable B. Roden, 16, b. Iowa, dau, at school William A. Roden, 18, b. Iowa, son, at school Bessie H. Roden, 11, b. Iowa, dau, at school Felix G. Roden, 85, b. Tenn, father John Tiffey, 19, b. Iowa, servant, farm laborer Bessie Roden married a Mr. Atherton, but the marriage didn't last. On November 3, 1924, Bessie Atherton, 31, now living in Peoria, Illinois, went back to Missouri Valley, Iowa to marry Dale Volney Stemple. He was 29, and it was a second marriage for him as well--his first wife, Bessie Melissa Cole, daughter of Jobe and Sarah (Dawcett) Cole, had sadly ended when Bessie (Cole) Semple died July 1, 1923 in Peoria, Illinois. When Bessie and Dale were married, he was working on the railroad. In 1926, they were living in Peoria, Illinois, and he had work as a grocer. By 1930, Bessie and Dale had returned to Missouri Valley, Iowa. Bessie's parents were in need of help, so Dale took a position there as chief of police. The 1930 US Census lists: Dale V. Stemple, 35, head, b. Ia, chief of police Bess H. Stemple, 37, wife, b. Ia Vonnie L. Stemple, 4, daughter, b. Illinois William T. Roden, 89, father-in-law, b. Miss. Sara E. Roden, 84, mother-in-law, b. Ohio Louis J. Roden, 59, brother-in-law, b. Iowa Bessie died November 17, 1941 and was buried in the Roden family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery, Missouri Valley, Iowa. Her husband, Dale Volney Stemple, moved to Denver.
