Description	:	Betty Jean Shields, 90, of Hiawatha, passed away April 29, 2016, at Pines South in Hiawatha, where she had resided for the last three years of her life. She loved living there. Such loving care…they were her family. Betty Jean Shields, one of two daughters of Roy and Flora Richmond Bowen, was born July 28, 1925, in Kansas City, Missouri. Read More	Betty Jean Shields, 90, of Hiawatha, passed away April 29, 2016, at Pines South in Hiawatha, where she had resided for the last three years of her life. She loved living there. Such loving care…they were her family. Betty Jean Shields, one of two daughters of Roy and Flora Richmond Bowen, was born July 28, 1925, in Kansas City, Missouri. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, attended schools there and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1943. She worked 8 years as a supervisor at Hallmark Cards. She married Richard Shields, May 6, 1950, in Kansas City, KS. They moved to Hamlin, KS, where they lived and farmed for 13 years prior to moving to Hiawatha in 1963 where they lived for 42 years. They enjoyed their small farm with its variety of animals. They also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and traveling together. She took care of Dena Nigus for eight years and enjoyed her time with her. She also had a home daycare for several years. They celebrated their 50th anniversary May 6, 2000, at the Church. He passed away in 2005. Betty was a member of First United Methodist Church and the UMW Esther Circle. Survivors include three daughters: Sharon (Tom) Winkelbauer of Leavenworth, KS, Linda (Les) Money of Fairview, KS, Joyce (Ron) Peterson of Hoyt, KS; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; step-mother Edna, sister Norma Smith, step son Robert Shields, and grand-daughter Angela Shields. A Celebration of Betty’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Shane Spangler officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.
