She was the granddaughter of Wilhelm Ferdinand Burow and the daughter of Anna Pauline (Burow) Kunrath. Another source are the scanned records from the Evangelical church of the village of Lanzig, Germany (now Poland). The line between Germany and Poland went back and forth through the years. The Burow family was from Krolow, but since Krolow didn't have a protestant church, they attended church at the village of Lanzig, which was two miles away. Search for Krolow on this site: meyersgaz.org. Both Krolow and Lanzig are near a lake called "Vietzker See". The Polish names for Krolow is Krolewo, Lanzig is Lacko, the Vietzker See is Wicko. BIRTH AND BAPTISM Carl L. Burow was born on March 27, 1840 in Krolow, Kreis Schlawe (Schlawe County), Pommern, Germany. His parents were Peter Burow and Charlotte (Groth) Burow. Peter was born about 1799. Charlotte was born about 1802. Peter and Charlotte were married 27 (?) Oct 1830 in Lanzig. He was 31 and she was 28. Both of their fathers were named "Christian", so Christian Burow and Christian Groth. There was no record of Peter Burow's birth in the Lanzig records. Christian Burow would also have been the grandfather of Ferdinand Burow who was a cousin to Carl. Ferdinand helped in providing Carl's passage to America. In return Carl had to work for Ferdinand for a number of years. Although there wasn't that much difference in age, Ferdinand had come to America in 1870, fully 23 years before Carl, and was well-established. Ferdinand is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in nearby town of Battle Creek, Ida County, Iowa. Ferdinand's father's name is unknown as yet. Carl was baptized 5 April 1840 at the evangelical church at Lanzig. His sponsors were Jacob Mielke, Heinrich Groth and Luise Mielke wife of Christian Mielke (record # 16 on page 450). SIBLINGS Carl had 3 older siblings listed in the Lanzig church records. He may have had younger siblings, but they are not recorded in the Lanzig records. Perhaps the family moved to a different town or the church records were lost or there were only four children. The older siblings are: 1. Friedrich August Burow, born in January 1832 in Crolow, baptized in January 1832 in Lanzig. His sponsors were Martin Groth, Friedrich Mielke, son of Jacob Mielke 2. Marie Wilhelmine Burow, born in January? 1835 in Crolow, baptized in January? 1835 in Lanzig. Sponsors were Christian Groth, Marie Pepenfus, wife? of Georg Groth, and Marie Burow, wife? of Christian Burow (writing difficult to read) 3. Charlotte Luise Burow, born August? 1837 at Krolow, baptized 27 Aug? 1837 at Lanzig. Sponsors are Johan Burow, Sophie Papenfust, wife? of Martin Groth, Friederike Peske. MARRIAGE RECORD. While in Germany, Carl married Pauline Augusta Kruggel on 5 November 1869 at Lanzig. Carl was a "Buduer?" living at Crolow. He was 29 years old. Pauline was 22 years old, the daughter of Carl Kruggel who was a "Tagelsfuer" at Crolow. Their marriage record is in the books of the Evangelical church at Lanzig, 1869, page 385, record # 11. The records are in the German language. Pauline was born August 6, 1847 in Pommern?, Germany. There is no record of Pauline's birth in the Lanzig records. She died August 4, 1918 in Cushing, Rock Township, Woodbury County, Iowa. CHILDREN Eight children were born to this union. Both the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses say that Pauline had 7 living children out of 8 born to her. The archives in Poland found a little daughter, Auguste Alwine, who was born to Carl Burow of Crolow in 1872 and died in 1873. However the mother's name is listed as Caroline Kruggel; not Pauline Kruggel, so it is possible that this is not the correct child. I asked the archives to check the years 1891, 1892 and 1893 for the birth of a different child and they checked these three years, but did not find any children born to Carl and Pauline. In Auguste's death and burial records, from Lanzig, only the father's name is listed and it is "C. Burow of Crolow". The scanned records I received were written in German and some were difficult to read. Take with a grain of salt. They are: 1. Bertha Wilhelmine, born 11 Sep 1870 in Crolow, baptized 13 September 1870 at Lanzig. Sponsors were Peter Burow, ? Wolff, and Bertha Kruggel - all from Crolow. 2. Auguste Alwine, was born March 15, 1872 in Crolow, baptized 24 March 1872. Sponsors were ? Wolf, Hermine Kruggel, both of Crolow and ?? Burow of Pustamin. Auguste died June 1, 1873 at the age of 1 year, 2 months and 16 days. She was buried on June 4, 1873 in the Lanzig church. 3. Friedrich August, born 5 June 1874 at Crolow. baptized 14 June 1874 at Lanzig. Sponsors were Carl Burow of Crolow, Duerfe? Miels? of Peesf, and Auguste Kruggel in Crolow 4. Wilhelm Ferdinand, born 1 March 1877 in Crolow, baptized 11 March 1877 in Lanzig. Sponsors were Tich, Voss and Kruggel - all from Crolow 5. Herman Carl, born 19 Jan 1880 in Crolow, baptized 24 Jan 1880 in Lanzig. Sponsors were C. Kruggel, W. Tietz and Bertha Wolff - all from Crolow. 6. Ida Wilhelmine, born 7 Nov 1882 in Crolow, baptized 26 Nov 1882 in Lanzig. Sponsors were ? Pazel from Schlakow, Minna Muller from Magselfit?, and Minna Muller from Nafmers???. (difficult to read) 7. Wilhelmine Auguste, born 15 Nov 1885 in Crolow, baptized 19 November 1885 in Lanzig. Sponsors were Wilhelm Scheil in ?, Auguste Wolf in Crolow and Friederike Burow in Marsow? 8. Franz Albert, born 30 June 1889 in Crolow, baptized July 6, 1889 in Lanzig. Sponsors were Albert Mangke?, Herman Tietz and Maria Tietz - all from Crolow. IMMIGRATION Following the births of all the children in Germany, the family came to America in 1893. Their DEPARTURE emigration record can be found on ancestry.com. Their residence place was Dubberzin, Pommern. Dubberzin is located in the county of Schlawe (as is Krolow and Lanzig) and the district of Koslin in Pommern. It is southeast of Krolow, further inland from the Baltic Sea. The Polish name for Dubberzin is "Dobrzecino". Dubberzin was 14 miles from Lanzig. Departure Date: 12 Sept 1893 from Hamburg, Deutschland [Germany]. Arrival Place: Baltimore. Ship Name: Steinhöft. Emigrants: 1. Carl Burow, male, age 53, Occupation: Arbeiter [laborer] 2. Their final destination was "Battel Crik, Iowa" – meaning Battle Creek, Iowa. Their passage was paid for by a "cousin". They had $140.00 in their possession. They were going to join a relative "cousin Ferdind. Burow in Battel Crik; State: Iowa. Residence". Additional Information: They were never in prison. They were not polygamists. They were not under a contract to labor in the U.S. And the condition of their health, physical and mental, was "good" for all of them. The immigrants included: Carl Burow, age 53, married Pauline Burow, age 46, married Wilhelm Burow, age 16, single Ida Burow, age 11, single Hermann Burow, age 12, single Wilhelmine Burow, age 7, single Franz Burow, age 4, single Friedrich Rogats, age 24, married Bertha Rogats, age 22, married Maria Rogats, age 56, a widow The oldest daughter of the family, Bertha, age 22, was already married to Friedrich "Fritz" Roggatz. Fritz and his widowed mother, Maria, also immigrated with the Burow family. According to the Loepp book, the family "settled on a farm in Midway vicinity, Morgan Township about 8 miles southwest of Cushing. Later moved to a farm south of Cushing. Carl loved singing with his family and playing his violin." The cousins who paid for passage to America were Ferdinand and Alvine Burow. They are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Ida County, Iowa. Ferdinand and Alvine immigrated in 1870 (23 years before Carl and Pauline) and lived in Chicago and Carroll County, Iowa, before moving to Morgan Township of Woodbury County in 1881. In 1894, Ferdinand purchased the Maple River Roller Mill at Battle Creek. Missing on the immigration list is the eldest son, Frederick August who was serving the German Emperor's army. Frederick came the next year. Friedrich's immigration record: Friedrich August Burow, age 19 years and 7 months, male, laborer, from Germany. Going to Battle Creek Iowa from the port of Antwerp, Belgium. Arrived in New York, New York on 17 Jan 1894. The name of the ship was "Waesland". Carl Burow signed his letter of intent to become a citizen on 20 Sept 1897 in Ida County, Iowa. According to Doris Loepp and Ida County GenWeb, Carl Burow became a citizen on December 7, 1899. William (minor) and Friedrich Burow became citizens on the same day as Carl. Carl died on April 25, 1902 in Maple Township, rural Battle Creek, Ida County, Iowa. His widow moved to Cushing, Iowa. Carl and Pauline Burow are buried in Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Midway, Woodbury County, Iowa.
