Description	:	Herman Carl Burow was born January 19, 1880 in Crolow, Schlawe (county), Pommern, Poland (later Germany). His parents were Carl Burow and Pauline Augusta (Kruggel) Burow. He was baptized in the nearby Lanzig church on January 24, 1880. According to wikipedia, the protestant church at Crolow had been demolished in 1870/80 and the Krolow people went to the Lanziger church which belonged to the church district Ruegenwalde . He was baptized in the nearby Lanzig church on January 24, 1880. In 1893 the Burow family came to America, Herman being about 13 years old. Their residence had changed from Crolow to Dubberzin at some prior to emigration. Herman and his family left from the port at Hamburg, Germany and arrived on September 27, 1893 at Baltimore, Maryland. The name of the ship was "Steinhoft". In 1895, the Burow family was living in Morgan Township of Woodbury County, Iowa. Herman was 14 years old. His father was a farmer. In 1900 U.S. Census, the Burow family had moved to Maple Township of Ida County, Iowa. The children still living at home are William Herman, Ida, Wilhelmina and Frank. Herman is 20 years old. In 1902, Herman's father died of lung fever. He was 62 years old. He was buried in Midway Cemetery. In 1907, "Herman Burow who was seriously injured at Henry Kurtz's place at Cushing a few days ago is now recovering satisfactorily. In driving on the scales with a load of grain, Herman got wedged between the top beams and wagon seat suffering a fractured rib and other painful injuries." – The Battle Creek Times, Thursday, April 11, 1907, page 5 In 1910, Herman, age 30, is farming in Morgan Township of Woodbury County. Living with him is his younger brother, Frank, age 20, and his widowed mother, age 62. In 1912, Herman, age 32, applied for a passport to go back to Germany, his residence being Battle Creek and his occupation, a farmer. His facial features were "regular", his hair "light brown" and his eyes were "blue". The application was signed on August 21, 1912. On November 16, 1912, he left Hamburg, Germany to come back home on the Ship "President Grant". He arrived in Cushaven; Boulogne-sur-Mer; Southhampton, New York. NEWS ARTICLE. "HOME FROM GERMANY. H. C. Burow of Battle Creek returned from a three months trip to his old home over in Pommern Germany. He reports that he enjoyed a fine visit and sailing voyage." - Ida County Pioneer, Ida Grove, Iowa, Wednesday, December 18, 1912, page 1, column 3 In 1916, Herman, age 36, had a closing out farm sale. The farm was located 4 miles north and 4 miles west of Battle Creek. He had for sale: 8 horses, 9 good milch cows, 6 spring calves, 3 heifers and 3 steers, 1 yearling heifer and one fall calf. He also had a line of machinery, some hay, chickens and 18 stands of Italian Bees. In 1917, Herman filled out a WW I Draft Card. His address was 1 Battle Creek, Woodbury County, Iowa. He was 38 and a citizen by his father's naturalization. His occupation was still farming. His nearest relative was Frank Burow on whose farm he was now working. In 1918, Herman's mother died. Pauline August (Kruggel) Burow was 70 years old. She died on August 4, 1918 at Cushing. She was mourned by 3 sons and 3 daughters. She is buried at Midway Cemetery. In 1918, Herman filed a WW II Draft Card. His occupation was farming and his nearest relative was still Frank Burow. He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair. In 1923, Herman, age 43, "purchased a fine new Ford Touring car from the Warnock Auto Co." – Battle Creek Times, Thurs. Oct 4, 1923, page 5 In the 1920, 1925, 1930 and 1940 censuses, Herman was living and working for his brother, Frank. Frank was married to Ida and they had a daughter, Dora, and a son, Albert. The farm was in Morgan Township, Woodbury County. In 1942, Herman signed up for the WW II Draft. He was 62 years old. His residence was Cushing, Woodbury County. He didn't have a telephone number. He was 5'5" and his weight was 160 . Hies eyes were "gray" and his complexion was "ruddy". This was signed on April 27, 1942. Also in 1942, "Cushing… Herman Burow recently bought the Kuhlken house in the northwest part of town, and moved into it the past week." - Ida County Pioneer Record, Thurs. June 18, 1942, page 5. In 1954, Frank Burow (Herman's brother) died. He was 64 years old. 1963 – Herman was living in the Good Samaritan Home in Holstein, Iowa. 1964 – Herman died at the Good Samaritan Home in Holstein. He was 84 and had one sibling left to mourn him, Mrs. Minnie Bottjen. His funeral was held on October 16, 1964, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Midway, Battle Creek, Iowa. The pastor was Rev. A. E. Alpers and the Walter Funeral Home of Anthon had charge of arrangements. He was buried in the Midway cemetery. Additions and correction to this short bio will be gladly accepted.
