GADE EILERS CALLED TO REST Long Illness Ended For One Of Johnson County Pioneers "The Sterling Courier" November 1948 The tolling of the bell at St. John Lutheran church Tuesday was for Mrs. Gade Eilers, whose health had been failing for many weeks. Mrs. Caroline Eilers was born to Matthes Panko and his wife Mary Krautz Panko on June 11, 1866 in Brandenburg, Germany. She was baptized in her infancy. At the age of three she came to the United States with her parents, who settled near Sterling, Nebr. After she had received instruction in the teaching of the Lutheran Church she was confirmed on March 25, 1883 in the St. Paul Lutheran church of Helena, near Cook, by Pastor J. H. Hempeler. On April 21, 1888 she was united in holy wedlock with Gade Eilers at Helena. The officiating clergyman was Pastor G. Bergstraesser. The union was blessed with eleven children, four sons and seven daughters. On May 1, 1932 her husband preceeded her in death. In 1937 Mrs. Eilers moved to Sterling. She enjoyed good health almost all of her long life. Her health began to fail four years ago and her condition became worse during the past year. For the last four weeks she was seriously ill. Mrs. Eilers departed from this life on Tuesday morning Nov. 23, 1948 at 2:15, having reached the age of eighty-two years, five months and twelve days. She is mourned and survived by her eleven children: John, Edward, Christy, Martin, Mary (Mrs. Wm. Schmidt), Minnie, Anna (Mrs. Wm. Panko), Louise (Mrs. Frank Schmidt), Emilia (Mrs. Louis Happell), Alvina (Mrs. Otto Panko), and Leta (Mrs. Fred Rengstorf), all of whom are of Sterling except Mrs. Frank Schmidt who is of Adams, Nebraska. She is survived by her seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers; Matt Panko of Sterling and Godfrey Panko of Burr; three sisters: Mrs. Anna Lipps of Sterling, Mrs. Christine Straube of Burr, and Mrs. Henry Harms of Tecumseh. To all is extended the sympathy of many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon in St. John's Lutheran church with Pastor John Voelk in charge. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
