Read More	Minnie Eilers Dies In Kearney Hospital Hold Services Sunday For Well Known Sterling Woman After a year's illness death came to Miss Minnie Eilers last Thursday night, August 12, 1954 in the Kearney State Hospital. Her age was 62 years, 9 months and 17 days. In December her health had failed noticeably and the doctor diagnosed her ailment as tuberculosis. Arrangements were made for rest and medical treatment in the state hospital at Kearney where it was hoped she would find recovery. She entered the hospital on March 17 of this year but did not respond to the latest medicines as it had been expected she would. Instead her condition grew worse and in time another lung ailment made itself visible, this being diagnosed as cancer of the lungs. From this illness there was no possible cure and she died Thursday night. Minnie, daughter of Gade Eilers and his wife Caroline nee Panko, was born in Johnson county, northwest of Sterling, on October 25, 1891. Shortly after birth she was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran church by Pastor John Burmeister. At the age of 16 years she was confirmed by Paul E. Schroeder. The second of eleven children in the family, Minnie seemed almost like a mother to the younger children in the family, especially after her father's death in 1932, which left the mother with such heavy responsibilities. In 1937 Minnie and her mother moved to Sterling from their farm home. As time passed, Mrs. Eilers suffered from the infirmities of age and was tenderly cared for in her declining years by her daughter Minnie. Mrs. Eilers died Nov. 23, 1948 and since that time Minnie had lived alone here. Minnie was a faithful and loyal christian, and especially during her illness she found great comfort in the visits from her pastor and in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. She always expressed her willingness to submit to her Lord's will with her. Until her health began to fail she was very active in the work in St. John Lutheran church in Sterling. She was faithful in attendance; took part in the Aid Society and any other church activities, and also devoted much of her time to assisting with the playing of the chimes each week ever since they had been installed in the church. As a neighbor and friend her kindness will long be remembered by those who knew and loved her. Surviving are six sisters and four brothers: Mary Schmidt, Anna Panko, Emilia Happel, Alvina Panko, Leta Rengstorf, John G., Ed G., Christy and Martin, all of Sterling and Louise Schmidt of Lincoln. Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Herman C. Damm, Sunday afternoon in St. John Lutheran church in Sterling. Mr. and Mrs. Edes Eilers, Mrs. Lloyd Harris and Altman Berg sang "Asleep in Jesus" and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Mrs. John Goldenstein. Burial was in St. John Lutheran cemetery and pallbearers were John Reutter, Eldo Barstler, Henry Christline, Wm. Giesmann, John Bargman and Harry Haynes. Sympathy is with those who mourn.
