Read More	OBITUARY DEATH OF GADE EILERS Pioneer Settler Called To Final Rest Had Lived in the Sterling Section for Seventy-two Years News of the Week Sterling, Neb. May 3 - (To The Chieftain) Another pioneer settler of this community was called to his final rest when Gade Eilers died suddenly at his home near Sterling Sunday evening. Arriving here from Illinois in 1860, he had lived in this neighborhood for seventy-two years. Juergen Gade Eilers was born at Wieserfehn, near Strackholt in Ostfriesland, Germany on January 7, 1854. He often said that he never knew his mother, who died when he was only three years old. He was then cared for by his older sisters and his father. At an early age he was baptized in the Lutheran church at Strackholt. In 1857 his father came to America with the family, first living at Minonk, Ills. for three years and then coming to Sterling in 1860. They lived on a farm three miles southwest of town and had to pass through many hardships those early settlers were exposed to. At the age of twenty-one years he made public confession of faith and was confirmed in the West Sterling Lutheran church. On April 21, 1888 he married to Miss Caroline Panko at the Helena Lutheran church, where Rev. G. Bergstraesser was pastor at the time. To this union eleven children were born, four sons, and seven daughters, all surviving their father. Thirty years ago Mr. Eilers bought a farm northeast of Sterling and lived there ever since. About that time he joined St. John's Lutheran church in Sterling, which had been organized then only a few years. He was always a regular attendant at the services until the infirmities of advancing age made it impossible for him to come. He had a warm interest for the welfare of his church and was at all time a willing and liberal giver. On March 10 Mr. Eilers suffered a light stroke of apoplexy. At that time he desired to receive holy communion and realized that his end was near. But when he rallied slowly and was able to go out into the sunshine it was thought that he might recover again. On Sunday he felt unusually well, enjoyed dinner with his family and was glad to have his aged sister Mrs. C. B. Fass visit with him. Then a little after four o'clock in the afternoon while talking to his wife and a visiting neighbor he had another stroke and died within a few minutes. His age was seventy-eight years, three months and twenty-three days. He leaves his faithful wife, who for forty-four years shared his joys and sorrows and the following children: Mrs. Mary Schmidt, Miss Minnie Eilers, Mrs. Anna Panko, Mrs. Louise Schmidt, John G. Eilers, Mrs. Emilie Hoppel, Mrs. Alvina Panko, Edward G. Eilers, Miss Leta Eilers, Christ Eilers and Martin Eilers. He is also survived by his sister Mrs. C. B. Fass. There are eleven grandchildren. There was a very large attendance at the funeral services, held at St. John's church on Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. C. August Decker in charge. The interment was at the Lutheran cemetery.
