Charley Beyreis Dead At Age of Fifty-four The Nemaha valley lost one of the best citizens and farmers July 26 at 6:15 A. M. when Charley Beyreis passed away at his home north of Seneca. Death was due to a malignant tumor. He had been seriously ill since February. Charley was born on January 7, 1880, making his age but 54 years, six months and 19 days. He was a son of Andrew and Anna Beyreis. The home where Mr. Beyreis passed away was the only one he ever knew. There he spent all of his life, his sister, Miss Carrie, keeping house for him after other brothers and sisters left to make homes of their own. These include William and Henry of Seneca; Louis of Ingalls, Kansas; Mrs. Louis Haffner, Bern; Mrs. Rose Meisner, Homewood, Kansas; Mrs. Lydia Ramsey of Basin, Montana. Mr. Beyreis was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. There are 10 nephews and 12 nieces. Charley's parents homesteaded the farm where he passed away. It had been in possession of the family since 1874. The original deed to the property bears the signature of Abraham Lincoln. Charley Beyreis was a citizen of firm convictions, of high integrity and purpose. He had been affiliated with Seneca Lodge I. O. O. F. for many years. The funeral service was conducted at Friedens Evangelical church by Rev. Otto J. Kruegger, Saturday, July 28 at 10:30 A. M. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery. Had A Passion For Fine Horses Charley Beyreis Provided for Horses in His Will The late Charley Beyreis who passed away recently, loved his horses. His sentiment for the high spirited animals was so deeply founded that he provided in his will that four of the eight, two sorrels and two blacks, are to go to his nephew, John Beyreis, and John is admonished always to protect them and in the end, when they are too decrepit for any use, he is to put them humanely out of the way. There was a good reason why Charley Beyreis thought so much of these animals. They are directly descended from the sire and dam brought by Charley's father, Andrew Beyreis, from Illinois when he came to Kansas in 1872. The grandmother of the four John is to keep was that dam. The four are full brothers and sisters- Morgan horses are of Spanish origin. Until the last few years when Charley became ill, he would allow no other hand to work those Morgans. He understood them. He feared others would abuse them. When Charley's health failed, he had Johnnie work them. And when Johnnie qualified, Charley observed his tactics and approved them. He showed his approval in his will, which stipulates the nephew is not only to have the four head of stock but a new Studebaker wagon, a 75-year old piece of antique furniture, but more important than everything else, the right to buy the Charley Beyreis 80. The terms of the sale are liberal too. He is given five years to pay each of the other 10 nephews and nieces $280 each and no interest is to be charged. Four other mixed Morgans, spotted animals are to be sold. However, Charley had a liking for one of these though the horse was of no particular use about the farm. He is marked in an extra ordinary way. A neighbor once suggested to Charley that he sell this animal but Charley stopped him. "Sell him," he said, "why should I sell him? Some people raise flowers, this horse is my flower!" The mother of the four horses John is to keep died a few years ago at the age of 32. A dead animal disposal company wanted to buy the carcass. "There is nothing doing," Charley answered, "We'll just bury her right here on the farm." There are other traditions in the Beyreis family. One is that the original land, 160 acres of the finest soil in Nemaha county, is not to pass from the members. Charley's father, Andrew Beyreis, passed this word down to Charley and Henry, the two brothers who inherited the quarter at his death. So when Charley came to the end, he, in turn provided that his nephew, John, was to have Charley's half of the old homestead. Originally Andrew Beyreis gave the quarter to Henry and Charley and they batched together for a few years. After a time the brothers agreed to sever partnership. They reached an amicable agreement. Henry taking the south eighty, Charley the north. Henry Beyreis has been a director of School district- No. 8 for 41 years. There is a post auger drilled well on the Henry Beyreis farm now supplying water for five neighbors.
