His father, Charles Henry, had completed 7th grade, and his mother 8th grade. But education was important to the family, and Charles Eugene graduated from high school. In 1935, the family was living in Modale, Iowa, but by 1940 had moved to Clay Township, Harrison County, Iowa. The 1940 US Census lists: Charles H. Stewart, 42, head, welder, b. IA Grace Stewart, 41, wife, b. IA Charle E. Stewart, 19, son, farm hand, b. IA Leo Stewart, 14, son, b. IA Thomas Stewart, 11, son, b. IA Donald Stewart, 1, son, b. IA When World War II broke out, Charles was there. He enlisted October 2, 1941 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and after training, left for overseas June 8, 1943. He was a member of Battery C, 189th Field Artillery Battalion, and the firing artillery were armed with 75mm howitzers. He returned from foreign service September 22, 1945, and honorably discharged October 7, 1946. He was awarded a Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry in action during World War II, and because he was injured, a Purple Heart. Charles married Lucille Clara Peters. In 1945, Charles signed on with the US Chicago and Northwestern Railroad at Mondamin, Iowa as a locomotive fireman. For coal-fired trains, the fireman would typically shovel about 5 tons of coal a day, watching for hot and cool spots to control partly by where he would throw the next shovelful. Sadly, Lucille died in 1992.
