Monterey Daily Cypress and Monterey American (Monterey, CA.), P. 1, Col. 4 Thu., Jun. 6, 1918 Charles Francis Eckhardt Dies at Ripe Old Age Charles Francis Eckhardt passed away at the family residence on Larkin street at about seven o'clock this morning. The deceased was apparently well last night and had been in good health as far as his advanced age would permit, going to the Memorial services only last Thursday. He was taken ill during the early hours of the morning and from then on failed rapidly until death came. Mr. Eckardt was eighty-nine years and ten months old at the time of his death, lacking only two months of seeing his ninetieth birthday. He took an active interest in all matters until the very last and was quite active for a man of such advanced years. The deceased was born in Germany, but his parents fled from Prussianism when he was but seven years of age. He was married in 1850, living in the east for a time, but coming West nearly half a century ago, residing at Gilroy until about seven years ago, when he came to Monterey. Mrs. Eckhardt passed away some five years ago, since which time he had resided here with his daughters. The following children survive him: Mrs. C. M. Hart of San Jose, Mrs. J. P. Sargent of San Francisco, Mrs. John Stuchel of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. C. E. Easton of Monterey, the Misses Clara and Etta Eckhar(d)t of Monterey, Charles H. Eckhar(d)t of Oakland and George Eckhardt of Pacific Grove. Charles Francis Eckhardt was a fine Christian gentleman, a good citizen and faithful husband and father. He had a wide circle of friends in the various parts of the country where he had resided who will mourn his death, and the Cypress-American joins with these in extending sympathy to his bereaved children. The funeral will take place from the family residence in this city on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. T. J. Barkle officiating.
