At his home in Spring Creek township, about 8 miles east of this city, last night at 7:00 o'clock occurred the death of Oscar Purdy, one of the oldest and best known residents of that locality. The deceased had been in poor health for sometime and his death did not come unexpected to his relatives and close friends, although until only a few days ago was he compelled to take to his bed. Mr. Purdy was about 73 years of age and had lived in Spring Creek township for many years, and his death will be deplored by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow and one son, Floyd Purdy. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Wesleyan Emmanuel church and burial will be made in the family lot at the Spring Creek cemetery. Purdy Charles Oscar Purdy, the youngest child of Olive and Mary Purdy, was born in Clayton County, Iowa, December 8, 1853. He departed this life June 20, 1928, age 74 years, 6 months and 12 days. He had two brothers and one sister, all of whom preceded him in death. In his boyhood he came with his parents to Black Hawk county. On December 8, 1880, he was united in marriage to Laura Belle Weaver. To this union were born two children, Floyd Purdy of La Porte City, Iowa and Mrs. Josie Broad who preceded her father in death February 14, 1920. C.O. Purdy and wife moved to their present home in March, 1881, and here resided the remainder of his days excepting one year spent in Missouri. He was a kind, devoted husband and father, a good neighbor and always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by family, neighbors and friends whom God has seen fit to leave behind. He leaves to mourn his widow, one son and six grandchildren besides many other relatives and friends. In all his married life before the illness that caused his death, he was never confined to his bed in sickness. Funeral services were held by Rev. Albert and Melvina Johnson at Emanuel chapel Friday at 2:00 p.m. Interment was made in the family lot at Spring Creek cemetery. [transcribed by S.F., January 2006]
