Hannan at 9:15 o'clock Tuesday morning in Boston. Mr. Hannan had been ill for some time, and owing to the hopeless nature of his ailment his death had been expected daily for the last week. He is survived by his wife and two children, a son, Charles, aged 22, and a daughter, Hazel, aged 20, who have made their home in Boston since the family removed from Council Bluffs about five years ago. The body will be placed in a receiving vault in Boston and will later, it is stated, be brought to Council Bluffs for burial. Mr. Hannan always regarded Council Bluffs as his home and had planned to return here to live, and for this reason had maintained his handsome residence on Second avenue since going to Boston. Charles R. Hannan belonged to that class of Americans termed "self made," and he took particular pride in the fact. He was born in Rochester, N. Y., March 19, 1856. When he was 2 years old his family removed to Dowagiac, Mich., and here he began the education, which perhaps is all the better for having been earned by his own strenuous exertions. When Charles was but 8 years old a disastrous fire swept away what wealth his father had gathered and left the son to win his way in the world as best he could. Turning toward the first opportunity which occurred, he began to earn money by selling apples and peaches on the street; this was followed by the sale of pop corn, and later pop corn and peanuts from stands at the country and state fairs; in fact, he turned his hands to anything by which he could make an honest dollar. It was thus the boy managed to obtain funds for his support and to defray his expenses while at school. After obtaining a high school education at Dowagiac he graduated from a commercial college at New Haven, Conn., and his education was completed by a three-years' course at Oberlin college. Having given particular attention to the science of finance during the latter part of his course of studies young Hannan planned to enter the fields of banking without further delay. He had less than $1,000 of his own money, but a reputation for industry and integrity as well as a great natural intelligence enhanced by the liberal education for which he had struggled so hard gave him the confidence of the people at home and resulted in bringing to him ample capital furnished by friends. In January, 1877, when not quite 21 years old, a partnership was formed by him with an experienced banker at his old home, and the banking house of Lee & Hannan was established at Quincy, Mich. Six months afterward Mr. Hannan purchased his partner's interest and continued the business under the name of Farmers and Merchants Bank. In 1881 he organized the First National bank of Quincy, which succeeded the business of his old bank, and he took the position of cashier. Then having caught the western fever, in 1883, he sold his interest, journeyed to Columbia, S. D., and organized the Farmers and Merchants bank there. He continued this institution until July, 1855, and then sold out to parties who merged it into the First National bank of the same place. His connection with the Citizens State bank of this city dated from this time. He assumed the position of cashier in January, 1899. The Citizens State bank purchased the old First National bank and assumed the name of the latter. In 1901 Mr. Hannan was elected president of the First National bank and in January, 1902, disposed of his interest in the bank to Ernest E. Hart, now president of the institution. Besides being receiver of the Kimball-Champ Investment company, which had a paid up capital of $300,000, Mr. Hannan was also receiver of the Lake Manawa Railroad company, and had direct charge of the management of the steam railroad between this city and the lake resort, and of the resort itself. Mr. Hannan organized the Omaha, Council Bluffs and Suburban Railway company, but after a portion of the line had been built and put in operation the company sold out to the Omaha & Council Bluffs Railway and Bridge company. He was at one time president of the Iowa Bankers' association and was interested in several other banks besides the First National of this city. Before going to Boston as financial agent in the New England states for Swift & Company, the packers, Mr. Hannan was actively associated with others in the construction of the electric interurban road from Detroit to Toledo. It is estimated that he left an estate of over $1,000,000. ------------------------------------ Omaha Daily Bee, December 11, 1908 (Council Bluffs News): The body of the late Charles R. Hannan, the former Council Bluffs banker which arrived from Boston yesterday morning was taken direct to Walnut Hill cemetery and placed in the magnificent mausoleum recently erected by the family.
