He was born January 10, 1908, in Topeka, Indiana, to Almon and Ida (Troyer) Hostetler. He married Mary Kate Eash on August 20, 1933, in Iowa. She died April 23, 1983. He married Edna Hershberger Gascho on November 3, 1984. She died August 29, 2006. Clarence enjoyed farming and working with horses. He traveled to all of the states except Alaska and Hawaii, most of the Canadian Provinces, the Dominican Republic, and celebrated his 80th birthday in Kenya, East Africa. He enjoyed playing checkers, other games, and pitching horseshoes. He was an avid reader. He spent many hours studying genealogies and remembering relationships. He enjoyed humor, always including at least one joke in each letter to his children. Family was very important to him, and he continually asked about each child and spouse, all of the grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Clarence volunteered with the Mennonite Disaster Service, served on the IMS board, gave many hours helping with building projects there and at East Union, taught Sunday School, and helped five years at a mission church plant at Sandtown. He played the organ prelude on Sunday mornings at Pleasantview Home until he was nearly 97 years old. His faith and personal relationship with Christ was significant, and he wanted others to experience Christ as Savior. He is survived by one daughter: Mary Winifred (John) Yordy, Goshen, Indiana; one son: John Almon (Molly) Hostetler, Columbiana, Ohio; one daughter-in-law: Charlotte Hostetler, Quebec, City, Quebec; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter: Charlene (Jim) Marner, Missouri; two stepsons: Eugene (Judy) Gascho, Oregon, and Gale (Della) Gascho, California; eight step grandchildren; 19 step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Clarence Manford Hostetler, October 8, 1961; three brothers: Elvon Kauffman, Perry Hostetler, and Cornelius Hostetler; and four sisters: Mary Hostetler, Ethel Buck, Elsie Stahly, and Nedra Miller. Funeral Services were on Thursday, Dec. 28 at East Union Mennonite Church in Kalona, Iowa. Rev. Jay Miller and Rev. David L. Yoder will officiate. Burial followed the service in the East Union Mennonite Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Goshen College Student Scholarship Fund, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), or Pleasantview Home. Pallbearers are Krista Joy Hostetler, Alan Todd Hostetler, John Stuart Yordy, Eric David Yordy, Michael Douglas Yordy, and Gilbert Gingerich.
