Evers A telegram was received yesterday afternoon from Salt Lake city announcing the sudden death of C. H. Evers, a well known resident of this vicinity who has been living in San Diego, Calif., these past two years. Mr. Evers had been in feeble health for several months and appears to have decided to make a trip to Fort Benton to visit with relatives and friends. He was taken seriously sick en route, and succumbed to heart failure when the train was at Salt Lake. Hans Rudolph left for that city Friday and returned with the remains Tuesday evening. The decedent was about 78 years of age and was a native of Germany. He came to the United States and located at Davenport, Iowa, in 1861, and about twelve years later removed to Dennison, Iowa, where he engaged in the meat business. He came to Montana in 1889 and embarked in the sheep raising industry at a location about 14 miles southwest of Judith, and was actively engaged in that occupation for about twelve years. About twenty years ago, Mr. Evers retired from ranch activities and built a comfortable home in Fort Benton in which he resided until removing to California. During his residence here he took part in public affairs of various kinds and served several years as mayor of this city. Mrs. Evers died about three years ago, and since that time the bereaved husband was broken in spirit and health. The bereaved family consists of five sons, three daughters and several grandchildren. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul's Episcopal church, and were attended by a large number of neighbors and friends. The pallbearers were Charles Lepley, C. W. Morrison, C. H. Ragland, August Heydt, Conrad Kulage and John Schwark. ---- Great Falls Tribune (MT), 9 June 1921 Chouteau Pioneer Dies Returning Home Fort Benton, June 8--Death called another Chouteau pioneer this week, when word reached Fort Benton that Claus H. Evers had died at Salt Lake City while enroute to Fort Benton from San Diego. The body reached Fort Benton Monday and services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Episcopal church.
